The Head of Jason Kenney’s Public Inquiry Into ‘Anti-Alberta’ Activities Worked Remotely From Palm Springs

Commissioner Steve Allan worked remotely on the public inquiry during a ‘personal’ trip to Palm Springs, spokesperson confirms

The head of Jason Kenney’s “public inquiry into anti-Alberta energy campaigns” took a mid-pandemic personal trip to Palm Springs, California.

In a statement, the public inquiry confirmed that Commissioner Steve Allan spent a week in the Coachella Valley in November, during which time he “worked remotely” on the public inquiry.

“He travelled for personal reasons and worked remotely while there,” an inquiry spokesperson told PressProgress.

The Government of Alberta launched the public inquiry in July 2019 to investigate allegations of “foreign funding of anti-Alberta energy campaigns.”

Groups Pan ‘Farcical Attack’ in ‘Anti-Alberta Energy’ Commission Report - The Energy Mix

The report of a two-year, $3.5-million report on supposed “anti-Alberta energy campaigns” shows the whole process up as a “farcical attack” on Canadians’ rights with a strong overtone of climate denial, say two campaign organizations that have seen a draft of the still-confidential document.

Gray says the Allan inquiry should matter to Canadians as an “alarming use” of government powers: it “attempts to marginalize and demonize” groups working to protect citizens from climate and ecological harms, and “equates ‘anti-Alberta energy campaigns’ with any efforts to question fossil fuels”. It “declares any effort to protect lands, forests, or wetlands from B.C. to Ontario as inherently anti-Alberta energy because such protected lands might get in the way of pipeline that oil and gas companies want to build”, ignores environmental groups’ collaborative work with the oil and gas industry, and wrongly implies that community opposition to fossil fuel development is somehow unique to Canada.

“Commissioner Allan has already demonstrated time and again that Albertans should not take his findings seriously,” he added. “If it wasn’t already obvious, the commissioner’s latest update of climate denier reports makes it clear: This inquiry lacks any shred of credibility.”

“If you read any of this stuff, it really strays into Marxism and conspiracy theory and George Soros and Bill Gates,” University of Alberta energy and environmental economist Andrew Leach told the national broadcaster. “It is astounding to me.”

A packet of documents the commission assembled and sent to reviewers for comment contained “textbook examples of climate change denialism” that “minimize or outright dismiss the reality and seriousness of climate change” and are “replete with generalizations, speculation, conjecture, and even conspiracy,” added Martin Olszynski.

Provincial opposition leader Rachel Notley said commissioner Steve Allan was using taxpayer dollars to “support and solicit anti-science, climate-denying ridiculousness,” and urged Jason Kenney’s United Conservative Party government to cancel the inquiry. “I think that it sends a horrible message to international investors. It undermines our energy industry,” she said. “Quite frankly, there should be an inquiry into the inquiry, except for the fact that that itself would be another waste of money.”
