Saying goodbye to an all time legend

There’s a decent chance you’ve never heard of Steve Dalkowski even if you’re aware of his biggest cultural impact.

He was, by most accounts, the hardest thrower in the history of baseball. He was, by all accounts, one of the wildest arms in the history of baseball. He never made the major leagues but his baseball reference page is a thing of pure beauty and wonder. Check out his k/9 and k/bb numbers. 

As for his legacy in the wider culture, he was the inspiration for Nuke LaLoosh in Bull Durham.

Dalkowski passed away yesterday at the age of 80 due to complications of the novel coronavirus. He had been living with alcohol-related dementia for 26 years before that. R.I.P., to an absolute legend.
