Spring Break 2017 I will be traveling from Brisbane all the way up the coast to Cairns thats 19 hours and 1 minute and 1,047 miles all within 9 days!
Friday April 14th, 2017 (Good Friday)
8:00 am: Since it was Good Friday most breakfast places were closed. My friend Katherine and I walked around looking for something to eat when we stumbled upon Starbucks. This was the first Starbucks I have seen since coming to Australia so naturally, I was excited and got a large mocha frappuccino. I ordered a small ham cheese and tomato sandwich. I heard the person behind me order a bagel with cream and I instantly regret getting the sandwich because I have never seen bagels as an option for breakfast here. Katherine and I met two girls Nikki and Theresa who were also on the one fish two fish trip. After we finished up breakfast we all went looking for the bus station we had to meet at. What seemed like miles carrying my extremely heavy bag (because lets be honest I always overpack even if it is for 9 days), we finally arrived at the bus stop. Watching the crowd grow bigger and bigger I began to wonder who is on the one fish two fish trip. Eventually these 2 fine young fellas come out and say “who's ready for spring break” And everyone on the one fish two fish trip followed them out to the bus. We said our names as we got on the bus. Once everyone was load on the bus we began our 9-day adventure! Our Tour guide Byron introduced himself as we were on our way out of Brisbane and headed towards The Australia Zoo (Yes, Steve Irwin’s zoo). Tommy was the other tour guide but he seemed more shy and quieter.
After hitting traffic (not like any kind of traffic back at home) We finally arrived at the Steve Irwin Zoo. Katherine, Theresa, Nikki, and I walked around Roo heaven and were able to pet and feed some kangaroos! They are so soft and not afraid of humans at all (especially if we had a bag of food in our hands!) After the Roos we walked around seeing all kinds of animals from crocodiles, alligators, tigers, red pandas, parrots, and turtles. What I found really unique and interesting was that most of the animals were rescued by Steve himself! There was a memorial about steves life and works with animals. It was so cool seeing all the things he did for the wildlife. We all grabbed a quick bite to eat before lining up to hold a KOALA! I can finally check that off my list of things to do in Australia. Fun fact: Queensland is the only state you can actually hold the koalas. It is because in all the other states it is easier for them to get sick and being handled by hundreds of people daily would not be good for them. (I didn't know that till today and I knew this was going to be my only opportunity to hold one, so I HAD to do it.) After holding Major the 8 kilo(17.6 pounds) Koala (yes their claws hurt and are actually pretty heavy), we went to see the Crocodile show. I thought this was so much fun! The talked about all the native birds and they all flew around the Crocosseum--Yes like a crocodile and the colosseum (which was a little scary having them swoop down by my head). Then they brought out the crocodiles from how they hunted, to how they caught their prey and how they are motion orientated so they can detect vibrations. After they played a small video of Steve all the things he did to educate people about crocodiles and wildlife. The atmosphere and vibe coming from the staff, I could feel Steve’s energy right there.
After a fun day at the zoo we jumped back on the bus for a nice relaxing 2-hour ride to our hostel for the night at Rainbow Beach-Dingos backpackers. For those who don't know what a hostel is... it is a shared room with 6-8 beds with sheets and a pillow provided with a bathroom. The whole trip we stayed at hostels (it wasn't as bad as it sounds). On the bus ride Byron told us about how each tour groups (there were 3 different ones-I was the 2nd and the best one) and each group gets a inflatable kangaroo, everyone signs it then come up with a name. It sounds stupid but we had to protect this Roo like it was our child. When the groups overlap with each other Roos can get killed by other groups. We decided on its name-Daddy (don't ask me why this was the name but it didn't stick for long). Once we got to the hostel, we dropped our stuff in our rooms and hopped back on the bus to go to Carlos sand blow. We all were like what in the world is carlos sand blow. Well.....when we made it up a little hike and saw the view I think we were all speechless. High sand hills (or dunes?) on either side with a view of the ocean on one side and the sunset over the town on the other side. It was just so breathtaking with the most amazing sunset I've ever seen. Pictures just didnt do it justice. The whole group sat and watched the sunset and got to mingle a little bit. After a while we headed back to the hostel for dinner. They gave us burgers (I don't know if I was just starving or if the burger was really good) but enjoyed some nice burgers. We had a dance party and got to mingle with our new friends. I actually met 2 people that we had mutual friends! One from Sudbury, Ma and one from Norwood, Ma. There was a small little pool that Theresa, Nikki, and I decided to go swimming in....It was freezing and I jumped right out and took a hot shower then went to bed.
Day one was finally complete and I had already increase my friend circle. It set the bar high for the rest of the week. Up next Fraiser Island and Lake McKenzie for day 2...........
