If Prayer Would Do It | Steven Levine
If prayer would do it I’d pray. If reading esteemed thinkers would do it I’d be halfway through the Patriarchs.
If discourse would do it I’d be sitting with His Holiness every moment he has free.
If contemplation would do it I’d have translated the Periodic Table to hermit poems, converting matter to spirit.
If even fighting would do it I’d already be a blackbelt.
If anything other than love could do it I’ve done it already and left the hardest for last.

[In the Mona Lisa,] Lacan saw the satisfaction of a beautiful woman who knows that she is being observed, who does not show that she knows, and whose observers do not show that they know that she knows. Basing his views on an essay of 1929 by the English psychoanalyst Joan Riviere, 'Womanliness as a masquerade,' Lacan regarded the woman's beautiful appearance as an aesthetic strategy of sublimation whereby she transformed herself through cosmetics and fashion from a flesh and blood creature in the Imaginary order of visible things into an abstract, impersonal, Symbolic ideal. In the paradoxical presence of her masquerade she made apparent the absence of the Real thing.

19yr Old Guy, Rippled Abdominals, 182lbs, 6ft Clean Cut Seeks Friends
Lane Egeland wrote: Are you really so bitter that you are too old and too fat to bitch fight at the bars anymore, that you have to take it out on people here?
I am the gay community,
Each day I grow older, and this brings age and experience to the gay community. With every new morning I can say "the gay community is one day older." Where once I was whory, I now am hoary. I, the gay community, pass from new to used to collectible to vintage to antique.
I am the gay community, and I am old.
Each day I grow fatter. This increases the size of the gay community, and makes us more of a force to be reckoned with. Within the soft folds of my expanding flesh I contain the history of all gay men. Other men see this, hot men, and they want to grasp my personal larder, and stroke my protuding mounds. They send me email about my belly. They wish me to enfold them in my bulk.
I am the gay community, and I am old and fat.
Each day I grow more bitter. Once I was young and sprightly enough to walk to the bars, once I was slim enough to fit through the doorjambs and enter the world of bitch fights, ah glorious bitch fights. Get her, I would say, doesn't she think she's something! Soon we would be scratching each other's eyes out, the contents of our purses flying though the air. Yes, that was fun, in a young and slim sort of way, and when I think of that world now closed to me a bitter taste of resentment comes to my mouth.
I am the gay community, and I am old and fat and bitter.
So here I am, creaky with age, burdened with heft, enslaved by attitude, the 19-year-old rippled-abdominal 182lb guy I once was buried deep within me, struggling to get out. He pounds at my enormous, creviced shell, refusing to let me accept my statesman-status gracefully. So I lash out with rancor. Yes, Lane Egeland, you have my number.
I am the gay community, and my number is 612-382-5968.
