Con motivo de su pronta visita a la Argentina, tuvimos la oportunidad de cruzar algunas palabras con Steven Wussow, bajista de la banda alemana Xandria, que estará tocando en The Roxy Live el próximo jueves 20 de octubre. Dianne van Giersbergen y compañía vienen a presentar su último trabajo de estudio denominado “Sacrificium” y su más reciente EP “Fire & Ashes”. En esta entrevista hablamos un poco acerca de estos dos lanzamientos y del que aún está gestándose. ¿Te la vas a perder?
Fire & Ashes
MSM: El año pasado lanzaron el EP “Fire & Ashes”, donde presentaron tres temas completamente nuevos, hicieron dos covers, y dos nuevas versiones de temas clásicos de Xandria. ¿Cuál fue la repercusión de este lanzamiento? ¿Piensan seguir incluyendo covers en sus futuros discos?
SW: Lanzamos el EP con la idea de acortar el tiempo entre “Sacrificium” y nuestro próximo álbum, solo para darle a la gente algo de nueva música mientras estamos de gira, componiendo o grabando. Fue muy bien recibido y con “Voyage Of The Fallen” contiene incluso una especie de mini “hit”.
¿Más covers? Hemos estado hablando vagamente sobre qué canciones estaría bueno grabar algún día. Así que, ¿quién sabe? Creo que lo haremos de nuevo cuando sea el momento adecuado, pero no por ahora, y de seguro no en el próximo disco.
MSM: Last year you released the EP “Fire & Ashes”, with three new songs, two covers and two new versions of classic Xandria tunes. What impact did this album have? Are you planning to include more covers in the next albums?
SW: The EP was meant to shorten the time gap between “Sacrificium” and our next studio album. Just to give the people already some new music while we are on the road, writing or recording. It was received really well and with “Voyage Of The Fallen” it even contains some kind of a mini hit song.
More covers? We have been talking loosely about which songs might be cool to record someday. So who knows?! I think we will do it again when the time is right, but not now and for sure not on the next record.
MSM: El arte de tapa del EP estuvo a cargo de Felipe Machado, mientras que el de Sacrificium es obra de Stefan Heilemann, quien ya había trabajado con ustedes previamente en Neverworld’s End. Creo que ambas portadas son hermosas y que están relacionadas, ya que tienen una temática en común. ¿Por qué decidieron trabajar con Machado en esta oportunidad? ¿Le dieron total libertad de interpretación o le indicaron más o menos la idea que tenían en mente?
SW: Quisimos probar algo nuevo o diferente con respecto a nuestro arte de tapa. Nos gustaron los trabajos que Felipe hizo para Blind Guardian o Rage, así que decidimos preguntarle si le gustaría trabajar con nosotros.
Todos nuestros artes de tapa están relacionados de algún modo, y como el EP es el nexo entre “Sacrificium” y el nuevo disco, este debía obviamente mostrar algunos de los elementos de “Sacrificium”. Intercambiamos entonces algunas ideas con Felipe así que él supo lo que queríamos, y luego corrió por su cuenta. Lo que te puedo decir es que, ¡el resultado es más que hermoso!
MSM: Felipe Machado was in charge of the cover design for the EP, whereas Stefan Heilemann, who had already worked with you in Neverworld’s End, draw the one for Sacrificium. I think both covers are beautiful, and they are related to each other, since they have a common theme. Why did you choose to work with Machado this time? Was he granted complete freedom to create his design, or did you share with him an idea you already had in mind?
SW: We just wanted to try something new or different regarding our artwork. We liked the stuff Felipe did for Blind Guardian or Rage so we decided to ask if he might be up for working with us.
All our artworks are related somehow and as the EP is the link between “Sacrificium” and the new record it should of course sport some of the “Sacrificium” elements. We exchanged some ideas with Felipe so that he knew what we wanted to have and then it was up to him. What can I say: the result is more than beautiful!
Theater of Dimensions
MSM: Para este nuevo trabajo cuentan con las participaciones de muchos músicos invitados, como ser Jeroen Goossens en instrumentos de viento, David Faber en cello y Ben Mathot en violines, además de la inclusión del PA’dam Chamber Choir. ¿Podemos esperar en este disco un sonido similar al de Sacrificium o uno más variado en instrumentación?
SW: Algunos de los músicos mencionados anteriormente también formaron parte de “Sacrificium”. El disco sonó muy bien, así que, ¿por qué no invitarlos de nuevo? Y tenemos otras lindas sorpresas bajo la manga para ustedes. Hemos incluido en el álbum cosas que nunca antes hemos hecho, algunos “experimentos”. Pero además, hemos dejado todo lo que ha caracterizado a Xandria hasta ahora. Todo lo que la gente ama de nuestra música. Será un álbum muy diverso y colorido. Realmente no puedo esperar a que la gente escuche lo que nosotros oímos día tras día.
MSM: For this new work, we have some guest musicians, like Jeroen Goosens in brass instruments, David Faber in Cello and Ben Mathot in Violins, in addition to the participation of the PA’dam Chamber Choir. Should we expect a similar sound to the one we had in Sacrificium, or will it be more varied, in regard to the instruments?
SW: Some of the guys mentioned above were already part of the “Sacrificium” record. It sounded nice, so why not invite them again. Of course we have also some nice surprises for you in the pipeline. We have stuff on the album we have never done before. Some nice “experiments”. But we have also all the Xandria trademarks on there! Everything people love about our music! It will be a very diverse and colorful album. I really can’t wait for the people to hear what we hear day by day!
MSM: Vienen bastante bien con las grabaciones. Ya tienen listas las líneas de bajo, guitarras, los coros y voces. ¿Podrá estar listo el disco antes de fin de año? ¿Tienen alguna fecha estimativa de publicación?
SW: Mientras nosotros estamos hablando, las canciones están siendo mezcladas y masterizadas. Faltan todavía algunos detalles finales. Aún nos quedan por hacer algunas sesiones de fotos y video en los próximos días y semanas. ¡Estamos muy ocupados! Pero si todo sale como lo planeado, el álbum estará viendo la luz a principios de 2017.
MSM: You are making good progress with the recording sessions. The lines of bass, guitar, backing vocals and leading vocals are all ready. Will the album be ready before the end of the year? Do you have an estimate release date?
SW: As we are talking right now the songs are being mixed and mastered. Some finishing touches have yet to be made. We still have to do some photoshoots & video shoots in the next days and weeks. So busy, busy times!
But when everything works out as planned the album will be out in early 2017.
Show en Argentina / Show in Argentina
MSM: Es la primera vez que la banda se presenta en Argentina con Dianne. ¿Qué expectativas tienen de este show que estarán dando el 20 de octubre en The Roxy Live?
SW: Nuestras expectativas son muy altas, ya que nuestro último show en Buenos Aires ha sido asombroso. ¡Vamos a ver qué pasa! Todos estamos con muchas ganas de tocar en Argentina otra vez. ¡Y de ir a comer unos buenos bifes, por supuesto! (Risas).
MSM: It’s the first time the band will play with Dianne in our country. What are your expectations for this show, which will take place the 20th October at The Roxy Live?
SW: Our expectations are quite high, as our last show in Buenos Aires has been absolutely awesome! Let’s see what happens. We all are really looking forward to play Argentina again! And to go for some nice steaks of course... Hahaha.
But when everything works out as planned the album will be out in early 2017.
MSM: Tenemos una sección en las entrevistas que hacemos, titulada “Until Your Last Breath”, donde les pedimos a los entrevistados que nos recomienden 5 discos que toda persona necesita escuchar antes de morir.
SW: Soy todo un nerd en lo que respecta a la música y particularmente a listas como estas. Soy el típico fanático que se compra toneladas de cds y remeras, y cosas en general.
Así que, ¿solo cinco? Hmmm… voy a dar lo mejor de mí y solo elegiré los primeros cinco discos de mis favoritos de todos los tiempos que vienen a mi mente. Aunque debe haber por lo menos unos 500 más que merecían ser nombrados acá. Si les interesa saberlos pregúntenme en Buenos Aires. (Risas).
MSM: We have a section in our magazine which is called “Until Your Last Breath”, where we ask you to recommend us 5 albums that everyone should listen to before they die.
SW: Ui…I am really nerdy when it comes to music and lists like this in particular. I am still an absolute fanboy who is buying tons of cds and shirts and stuff.
So only five? Hm… I will give my best and just pick the 1st 5 of my all-time faves that come to my mind. Though there are at least 500 more that would deserve to be named here.
