8. Bed sharing or roommates AU? I’ve written both, but I think I have to say bed sharing. Or, even better, sitting on the floor but falling asleep together with someone’s head on someone else’s shoulder, or knees touching, or some other kind of quiet contact.

10. Mutual pining or enemies to friends to lovers? I’m weak for mutual pining, anon. Weak. I like enemies to friends to lovers (and that’s sort of what’s happening in “Lights”) but my take on it is usually much more low-key than people use that term -- my enemies to friends to lovers usually includes mutual pining, actually, haha. I like mutual pining when each person progresses at a different pace, and so there might be some hesitance or lack of trust alongside the pining.

do you think you’d ever revisit htw or the hobbit in general exploring thorins pov?

The short answer is yes! The longer answer is, man, I really want to, and I have notes and actually the start of a fic on my hard-drive somewhere, but I have a lot of other things (both fandom/writing and Real Life) taking up my time right now so if it happens, when it happens, it probably won’t be for at least a year. Which is maybe a not-great answer, I know, but I really do want to return to HTW someday, and even though I’m not currently writing for The Hobbit, I’m always a Tolkien fan.

hi! i saw on lights entirely extinguished (which i LOVE btw, fantastic update and fantastic writing as a whole!!) that you're a) an academic b) who's been reading kierkegaard. i'm a chipper little philosophy undergrad who read parts of fear & trembling last year, so i thought that was the dandiest coincidence i've run into so far in 2018! is guilty/not guilty very different from f&t? might have to be next on my reading list ^u^

Hi! I’m super belatedly replying to asks, so this is probably not very helpful to you anymore, but all the same: I have never actually read “Fear and Trembling,” actually, which makes me a poor Kierkegaard scholar, I know. But I love “Guilty/Not Guilty?” a whole lot. It’s basically a diary, written by this young man who’s trying to figure out the choices he’s made, his feelings towards a woman, and life in general. So I can’t give you a good answer besides to say, add it to your list! Good luck with your philosophy studies.

I've been rereading the chapters lots and every time I do I fall in love with your characterizations all over again and aaa that's it thanks for coming to my ted talk you're a gem and I hope you're having a nice holiday

This is really late in reply (I’ve been away from tumblr) but thanks for your enthusiasm and your kind words! The Kamino arc now exists in “Lights” so if you’ve read it, I hope you enjoyed it. I’m writing the aftermath right now, which is something I’m very excited to share with you all soon.

So I fell behind in my writing schedule for “Lights” but I’m working on it tonight for a little while yet. Talk to me about things you’d like to see in this fic! I kind of lost inspiration for a bit and now I’m trying to get back into it, and am always happy to hear your thoughts.

I'm also not opposed to (minor to moderate) spoilers for future chapters, so if there’s something in canon that you’re wondering how it will play out in “Lights,” talk to me about that too!

Haha, well, I’m not going to stop you. *thumbs up*

Actually, there are some core similarities in HTW and my bnha fics: they’re both about people who are drawn to each other for reasons they don’t fully understand, and then they try to make sense of those reasons, and end up hurting each other, but having good experiences along the way, and connecting with each other, and finding some relief in each other. The relationship is a little healthier in my bnha fics than in HTW, I think, but whether that’s because the characters are older or I’ve become less cynical, I can’t say.

I’ll also put this out there: One of the things I believe in, when writing fanfic, is that I should write a fic that someone who’s not familiar with the source material could still read and enjoy. I think it’s lazy to assume everyone has read/watched the source material, or has viewed it all the way through, or with as much attention as the author. I know one of the appeals of fic is that you (the writer) don’t have to do all the world-building and character-creating, but for me those are some of the best parts of writing, so I like to do them anyway. I think the only thing you’d really need to know, to read my bnha fic (like “Lights” for example) is that they’re in a world where some/most people have super-powers called “quirks.” I don’t fully explain all the side characters (like the students, or villains) and you probably get more of the references if you know the source material, but the main drive of the story is these two characters coming together and since that’s what I care about, I write it into the fic in a way that – hopefully – can be understood even by someone who hasn’t seen/read the series, or who’s read a summary or looked at the wiki but nothing more.

Regardless of whether you read my bnha fic or not, I’m really glad to hear that you loved HTW! Thank you so much. It means a lot to me :)

regarding you awnser to question number 6 to HTWWW i actualy found new music and new reads cause of that fic!! i really loved all those little refs you included. it felt like you were sharing parts of yourself with the story. idk like your personality was showing?

Ahhh I’m so glad! The music & books that I included in HTW are all super important to me (the songs in particular are some of my all-time favourites) so it’s definitely my personality, and I’m really glad that you enjoyed those details!

#6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

HTW is the one that relies most on music & external references (books, quotes, films) to set the mood/tone. So something like it could never be published -- the copyright permissions would be too costly/impossible -- but as a fic, I like the idea of it being a multi-media thing. In an ideal world, someone would read it and listen to the songs when they come up, and then go out and read some of the books mentioned, for the whole experience. Of course, I’m happy when people just read the fic!

#9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

Initially there was a much bleaker ending. I’ve talked about this before, but essentially it became clear to me when I was writing it that their relationship wasn’t a healthy one, and they were both suffering for it, and so things had to come to an end. I decided to end it with ambiguity (less so now that there’s an epilogue) and some hope for the future, but there was an ending in which [SPOILER] Thorin died on the mountain, and then another ending in which he didn’t die but they never spoke again. 

#12: What do you like least about this fic?

Besides the Thanksgiving party that I mentioned earlier, the other thing I would tone-down in the fic if I ever rewrote it is the whole Azog thing. I have so many notes about him & he has this whole weird Russian gangster backstory that is just so unnecessary, ultimately, to what the fic is trying to do. And again, it was a case of me trying to put more canon in, when the fic wasn’t really suited to it.
