literally rust. man's wife turned him into an alcoholic, abused him physically, emotionally, and s3xually, made him raise a kid (that he still loved despite it being a result of said abuse), and then threw him out when he tried to put up a fight. he got lost in drugs and more alcohol after that, and ended up an enemy of the Chaos Guardians for his violent behavior. eventually, during a fight with them, he breaks down. everyone is confused, but helix goes to check on him and rust just kinda sobs on the ground. the Chaos Guardians take him in for a while, and rust and helix form a sort of father-son bond since rust can no longer see his real son, and helix's father was never good.
