Marianne, stopped in the doorway, looking in for a moment. Her heart filled with sympathy. He looked so hurt, the poor man. And all for her–to protect her. She was sure that she could have handled herself–French women are strong!–but still. He was protecting her. From some men with unsavory ideas in their eyes, at that. Men who were bigger than him. And outnumbered him. Not that she hadn’t helped him out during the fight, because she wasn’t going to stand idly by. But still.

With a cluck of her tongue she came in, the heels of her boots leaving soft clicks on the tile floor. She gave Arthur and sympathetic smile as she approached the side of the bed. “How are you feeling, mon lapin?” she asked as she ran a gentle hand through his hair.
