Internet dating is rough, ya’ll. If you’ve never tried it, consider yourself lucky. It’s basically a full time job if you are serious enough about it to sincerely want to find someone to fall in love with, walk down the aisle with, have babies with and generally be with forever and ever.
I don’t know about you, but none of that stuff really sounds all that wonderful.
Generally, when people ask me what I’m looking for my answer is “someone that I can spend some time with that I eventually don’t want to punch in the face.” Easy, right? I wish. Lately I’ve found that no dudes believe me when I tell them this. They are surprised at my lack of willingness to settle for a life that everyone in society expects me to have. Does that mean that I never want to get married? Of course not. But I’ve been actively dating for nearly two decades now, and the one thing that I have learned above all else in regards to relationships that there is no way I am going to settle on someone or something just because people expect me too. Ugh. People. Why can’t you just be happy with the fact that I’m happy (for the most part) with my life as it is right now?
So, lately I’ve taken to the course of doing what I am now referring to as “dating like a dude.” What does this mean, exactly? I told my mother this the other night, and she gave me the side eye and said “I’m not sure I like the sounds of that. Are you just hooking up?” Now, my mother and I have a great relationship; and for the most part I tell her everything. For the most part. But I’ve learned that much like I do not care to be privy to my parent’s sexy stories, my mom doesn’t really need to know all that much about mine either.
I explained to her my theory behind dating like a dude. Basically, I’ve taken all the pressure and expectations out of meeting these guys. I have no hopes that this one might be THE ONE. I know, it sounds depressing, and maybe a little bit like I’ve given up…the fact of the matter is though; that once you remove any expectations about what may or may not happen – that’s when the fun starts to happen. The meeting new people, the chance encounters with someone whom you might not have otherwise given a second look at, the adventure that comes with letting your guard down and being yourself and being 100% comfortable in showing your true self. This is me, like it or not. I’m too old to pretend to be that girl who likes the things that you like. I’ve got too much going on in the rest of my life to fake it with you. And I’m not sorry about that.
The great thing with dating like this, is that you can pretty quickly weed out the ones who just don’t hold your interest or attention. If you can’t challenge me, or engage me, or fuck – have a conversation with me; I’m out. It’s not you, and it’s not me…it’s just you and me together will never work.
A few weeks ago, I had a marathon dating weekend. Three first dates over the course of Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Three completely different dudes, ranging in age, profession, looks, and interests. A lawyer, an environmental activist, and a chef. Now, if you know me at all – of course you’re going to jump to the conclusion that I had the best time with the chef. You would be wrong. Me and Mr. Lawyer man hit it off wonderfully. He was funny and charming and kept me laughing for our entire date. He was engaging and wanted to know things about me, and he answered questions in return. A true give and take. Unfortunately, the other two guys were a bit more on the dull and boring side. Like having to pull teeth to have a conversation with them. First dates should be fun and interesting, and if I’m ready to call it a night twenty minutes after saying hello then odds are we probably aren’t going to be compatible in living happily ever after together.
I know I’m a lot to handle. I know that I’m not perfect. But hell, no one is. I think the best part about being a woman in my thirties is finally feeling secure enough in my insecurities to know that I’m kind of an awesome person. If you can get on board with that, cool. Let’s hang out sometime. In the meantime, I’ll still be trolling the interwebs, stalking your online profile, and figuring out the perfect opening line to message you with.
Oh yeah, I’ll message you first.
