Stilt Fishermen

This is a fishing method unique to Sri Lanka, with fisherman primarily living within a 30km stretch of the southern cost between Unawatuna and Weligama. They sit on a cross bar - called a petta - tied to a vertical pole driven into the sand a few metres from the shore. Through this method, they primarily catch small fish such as spotted herring and mackerel. 

This is a fairly recent tradition, dating back 80 years or so. It is thought to have begun in response to food shortages during World War II. The skills these men learnt from adapting to their circumstance was passed down to at least two new generations of stilt fishermen. 

However, nowadays, the catch is small and growing smaller, calling into question how long this tradition will last. The 2004 tsunami changed the Sri Lankan coastline, limiting access to fish by this method. Now, fishermen tend to rent their poles to actors, who serve as a tourist attraction. The majority of fishermen have turned to new sources of income, such as farming.

. . Fishing on stilts is a centuries old tradition in several areas of Sri lanka. Although beautiful to look at, these fishermen have very hard lives. Perched on uncomfortable stilts for hours, exposed to the elements in the hope of catching a few tiny fish that they can sell for next to nothing. Its no surprise that many of them have taken to pose for tourists instead. However, tourists are not usually around at six in the morning for the sunrise, so photographing them at this time guarantees a genuine experience. A #tbt to Sri Lanka and three portraits of stilt fishermen outside Galle in Weligama. Be sure to swipe through all three and to the fourth image which shows one in action. They fish for hours balanced on a stilts in the ocean catching fish not much larger than larger that they sell for pennies. Between economic hardship and tsunamis wiping out areas and fishermen, the practice has greatly dwindled and you definitely find some places where they do it mainly to get money from tourists. One image in my head I had of Sri Lanka was the Stilt Fishermen, made famous by the pictures of them taken by Steve McCurry in 1995

It’s often described as a traditional fishing method of Sri Lanka but it came into being just after World War II. It was apparently widely used all along the coast until the tsunami in 2004. Nowadays it’s mostly a tourist attraction. The fishermen have found out that they make a better living posting for the cameras than by fishing
