Introduction
We were given a Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet from Verizon to put through the paces. Sony is targeting the iPad/Surface market with this 10″ tablet, and we got our hands on a demo unit courtesy of Verizon to bring you a hands-on review and first impressions.
The Specifications

MicoSD: Yes and expandable up to 128GB
Weight: 439 grams, 15.49 oz
Camera: 8.1 Megapixels 8x zoom and a front facing camera: 2.2 Megapixels HD recording in 1080p
Dimensions: 172 x 266 x 6.4 mm, 6.8 x 10.47 x 0.25 inches
Display: 10.1 inches TFT
Resolution: 1920 x 1200 pixel display
3d capable: Yes

The Reviewers
JJ Hammond:
I am really tough on tablets. Why? Well because I want better from every tablet that I use. Plus I compare every tablet to a comparable laptop or in this case Chrome book replacement.
Alejandro Ramirez:
I am extremely picky when it comes to the quality of the gadgets I buy, so I look into every detail in form and function.
Design
JJ: Super slim profile. If you are in the market for a very thin and light device the Z2 is your best bet. When slightly pressing on the device you can hear some small cracking sounds (not breaking it) this gives the impression that the tablet is easily breakable. The screen is fantastic. I was really impressed.
Alejandro:
This device is light and thin like no other, the contour is pleasantly done with very smooth rounded edges, and the back has a really good grip that makes it feel like faux-leather.
The power button is easily accessible, although the headphone input was placed at the bottom of the device which might make it a bit challenging to use if you have it docked to a keyboard or sitting on a stand.
There is no kickstand so you’ll have to get yourself something to make it stand up.
Screen
JJ:
Some glare on the screen which I believe is from the dust/scratch resistant screen protection that comes on the tablet.
Alejandro:
The screen looks great, but has some glare and it’s a bit hard to read in plain sunlight, so it’s most likely a device that will be best used indoors.
Included Software
JJ:
Verizon has their own cloud storage option. Redbox app comes on the tablet.
Also the Verizon Messaging app. This app allows for group messages and/or messaging services.
Alejandro:
Something that stands out is the included copy of Quick Officewhich allows you to open Microsoft Office documents, and it’s a full version, not a trial.
Accessories
JJ:
I don’t usually get excited about accessories but there is an opportunity here for me to really get off track with possibilities of this tablet. First, the dual shock 3 PlayStation Controller that allows you to play games like a PlayStation, not exactly a PlayStation game, but really close. The game play would be the Google Play Store.
Alejandro:
I tried it with a generic wireless keyboard and it feels a lot like working on my iPad 3, very comfortable, but like with iOS, restricted to keyboard-only interaction (no trackpad/mouse support).
Sound
JJ:
Really surprisingly well. I wasn’t too impressed. However, I am taking into account the competition and the thin design of the tablet. Better than the iPad in the sound category.
Alejandro:
The tablet has above average sound coming from its built-in speakers, I actually thought it was pretty darn good compared to an iPad or a Surface Pro.
When plugging a pair of headphones, I wasn’t disappointed by the quality either, although I already complained about the input being at the bottom of the device.
Network Connectivity
JJ:
Amazing, by far the best Wifi and LTE connectivity on a tablet that I have used in the last 3 months.
Alejandro:
The WiFi antenna is very good, I was able to connect to a couple of different networks of varying degrees of speed and traffic, and I was able to enjoy the Xperia with no issues.
The Verizon LTE network is blazing-fast, and it’s really hard to turn off in favor of WiFi. I tried it both indoors and outdoors and the connection quality was excellent in both cases.
Performance
JJ:
I think the model I tried was a little slow. I am not sure what caused this? Maybe just this particular device. Loading was a common theme. It wasn’t a long time but enough of a difference for me using multiple different tablets a day. However, for normal users I think it will be much faster than what they are used to. Great first tablet.
Alejandro:
Don’t let its slim figure fool you, this tablet is fast and can manage multitasking really well.
Conclusion
JJ: I would buy into this device. There are really cool accessories, great camera front and rear, Android apps, and PlayStation integration.
Alejandro: If you are already a Verizon customer, you can add it as an additional device to your account and take advantage of month-to-month pricing while sharing your data plan, in which case, if you love Android, this is a great tablet to have.
