“You’re in love with me.”

Stone choked on his coffee, not expecting his morning to begin like this. The doctor gives him a warning look, almost daring him to try lying to see where it would take him. He knew the possibility of being found out. He even prepared a statement, assuring the doctor he can remain professional even without his feelings being returned or acknowledged.

“Yes sir but-”

“Snap out of it!” the doctor barks.

He turned to face the doctor, expecting disgust or something adjacent to that. Stone was too familiar with the doctor to not know those emotions too well. The look on the doctor’s face was different than that. If he didn’t know better he would call it fear. But that can’t be right.

“I mean it. You need to snap out of this” he twirls a hand in the air. “Love nonsense.”

“It’s not that easy,” Stone says.

Grabbing his jaw hard, Stone knows bruises will likely form, he is pinned against the wall. Stone struggled. Well, put up a good show of one. If he was inclined, he could have broken free and they both knew that. A single badnik floating reminds him why that would be a bad idea.

“Now, you are going to stop this love nonsense, right here and now,” he growls.

“Of course doctor,” he whispers.

The doctor lets him go and sends him off to fetch the latest brief from Commander Walters. Out of sight, he fixes his tie. That went better than he expected.

this connection is on purpose, i’m really glad you’re paying attention!! the knights templar had a particularly heavy influence in lebanon, where the local maronite christian population welcomed the crusaders and allowed the catholic church to establish a foothold in the area. it’s not satire, but it is ironic. i’m putting a lot of thought into the realities of empire, and the inherited history of it. i personally headcanon stone’s grandparents as christians that left the levant when tensions between muslims and christians were rising post ww2, as i wanted to give him a family and background that would make voluntary military service make sense. thank you for asking!
