SDSU Has More Than Just Athletes
South Dakota State University is well known for its athletics, nursing program and even Cookies and Cream ice cream.
But few know about one team that supports the foundation on which SDSU was built: agriculture.
One of the biggest clubs that gets little recognition is the livestock judging team made up of students from different states.
The 2014 livestock judging team has 12 members, and not only are these students excelling in classes (the team holds an average 3.0 GPA and 15 credit hours) while devoting their life to the judging team, but they are also making a large impact on campus. All of the students on the judging team are involved in Block and Bridle, one is the president of Ag/Bio Prexy Council, four are on the Little International staff, and a few have been on previous collegiate judging teams at SDSU.
Coach Joshua Cribbs has high hopes for this year’s team. “I believe that they could place in top ten at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY this November” said Cribbs. He should know what it takes to be a top ten team, as he coached a National Champion team at Texas Tech before he came to SDSU.
Cribbs believes that not only can the team place top ten, but that some members could reach All American Status, which is determined by academic success and judging performances.
Major competitions that the team travels to are: National Western Stock Show (Denver, CO), Iowa Beef Expo (Des Moines, IA), Sioux Empire Farm Show (Sioux Falls, SD), Houston Livestock Show (Houston, TX), American Royal Stock Show (Louisville, KY), and many others in Minnesota, Kansas, and Missouri.
The livestock judging team has grown in the past few years, and they are gaining a great reputation. Anyone can donate finances to the endowment that the livestock team has set up for travel and lodging expenses while they compete.
