29/30: Kwame Ture. Known to the United States as Stokeley Carmichael, he was born in Trinidad and was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement and is credited with the phrase “black power.” He was a leader in the fight for civil rights, and was inspired to join as a young man by the lunch counter sit-ins of the 1950s and 1960s. He participated in the Freedom Rides, and eventually became the prime minister of the Black Panther Party (and was the originator of the panther as the symbol for the party). He was a controversial leader, following the “by any means necessary” philosophy of Malcolm X, rather than the passive nonviolence that was more palatable to the American public. His strong stance distanced him from the broader establishment of the movement, and he eventually left America to live in Guinea, where he lived until his death in 1996. The civil rights movement has been shaped by its peacemakers, but just as much by fighters. Regardless of the controversy his words and views stirred up, the work he did was important and lasting. .
