Art Basel, Miami Broken Glass . . . This trip to Miami, I had two cameras get stolen, one with a brand new lens on it. We had endless complications with our accommodations, which @george_mulcahy suffered the brunt of, and as of now, have still not gotten paid for a week long job. The culmination of the insanity being, the event itself never ended up happening, and the mural never got finished. Throughout this debacle, we had the client lying to us, misrepresenting information, talking in circles, not showing up... and repeatedly telling me that we weren't as important as the "talent" as the "artists" that she had 'bigger fish to fry.' It brought me back to my touring days, years ago, doing club VJ shows, fighting for the basics, getting lied to daily, and not being considered an artist, by others or by myself. It made me realize I have grown somewhat comfortable with the title of artist, albeit not 'the talent' but it has been years since someone has questioned my qualifications to my face, and then being at Basel with this total melting pot of really accomplished professionals and untrained kids w cans of paint... Everywhere u turn another 'artist.' Painting shapes on walls while the fabric of American Democracy erodes around us. From that platform to this one, the meaning and value of the work is always under scrutiny, and often obscure at best. At the end of the day, I lost money, time, and gear... but it made me realize what great clients I have, what great partners I work with. Clients who treat me with respect, who don't call into question my role as VJ, photographer, documentarian, director. I feel thankful that I work with honorable people who truly see the best in me and value my work, and the work of our amazing team... it's such a blessing.
