hi!!! i love your blog and you seem really cool and i was just wondering.. im pretty new to Femme as an identity and i was wondering if you could/would want to share about your experience as high/stone femme. i don’t know if it applies to me because i’m a little unsure about 1) what it means and 2) i haven’t delved deep into that area of my psyche yet 😳 no worries if not!!! i hope you have a great day!!
Thanks for sending this to my ask box 👀
My answer(s) are completely related to my own opinions and experiences as a high/stone femme. I in no way shape or form intended to speak for others who identify as a high/stone femme or as a stone lesbian in general.**
First, I think it’s important to establish what it means to be “stone” in a broad sense. In the lesbian community we use this term to describe someone who has strong sexual boundaries. Typically, someone identifies as either a stone top/bottom and or stone butch/femme. I think it is important to establish, too, that stone butch does not mean stone top just as stone femme does not mean stone bottom. Any lesbian can identify as stone regardless of how masculine or feminine they present.
For me, high/stone femme, on a very basic level, refers to someone whose boundaries align with receiving sexual acts but not “reciprocating” them in a traditional manner. When we talk about sex, a lot of ideas surrounding “reciprocation” refer to heterosexual intercourse and sexual interactions. This, of course, means nothing in a sapphic/lesbian context. Traditionally gendered notions around sex should not exist in sapphic/lesbian relationships. More often than not, when we talk about sex in a sapphic manner, we do just tend to use terms such as top/bottom dom/sub as they’re much more reflective of our preferences in the bedroom.
To delve back in the specifics of the high/stone femme identity, I, for instance, have boundaries in the sense that I do not have any desire to perform penetrative sex on my partner. It does not feel comfortable for me. The idea of penetrating my partner with a strap on, fingers, a toy, etc, is not enjoyable and again, extremely uncomfortable for me. Furthermore, I don’t feel the need to touch any part of my partner’s body that does not feel comfortable for them (ex. I would not touch their chest or genitals if that was uncomfortable for them). I definitely enjoy boobs as much as the next person (I also feel comfortable with giving oral sex) but again, it’s not a “must” for me. What does feel comfortable for me, however, is receiving acts of penetrative and oral sex and generally undertaking a submissive role in the bedroom. Again, this is my experience as someone who identifies as a stone *bottom* femme. Some stone femmes identify as stone tops.
I want to add too that it’s okay not to know how you identify. You don’t need to label yourself and you don’t need to label yourself for other people’s sake. Feel free to take your time and explore how you feel and if a particular identity feels reflective of you.
I actually spent a good ~3 months reflecting on if stone femme was an identity that aligned with my own preferences. I knew that I had a strong preference for a sub role in the bedroom bed I spent a lot of time reflecting on what I want/need in a sexual relationship AND factoring in what my potential partner’s boundaries may be. I didn’t want to identify as a stone femme bottom without fully understanding my own boundaries or the boundaries of a stone top partner.
This became a rather long response 💀 but I hope it offered some clarification, anon🫡. I would also recommend looking into some readings on butch/femme as social roles within the community.
Oh, and to be absolutely clear, when we’re talking about sex reciprocation and the like this post is trans-inclusive. No TERF bullshit around these parts 🔪
