Today Liam Fox, the trade secretary, is in Washington DC to start those US-UK trade talks, and there’s every reason to be fearful.
We were not told who would attend this meeting, or what was on the agenda. MPs were even refused this information in parliament. What’s more, MPs don’t have the power to guide the talks, set red lines, amend or even stop an eventual deal. It’s all being done in the dark.
Liam Fox has fired the starting gun on a new set of trade deals that have all the hallmarks of TTIP – corporate courts, NHS privatisation, climate-wrecking measures and deregulation. The US is just the first: Fox’s department has ten trade working groups with 15 countries, which will all be meeting in the coming weeks and months.
We shall not let them give away food security, healthcare and the climate for the sake of corporate interests.
Organise, petition, protest!
