Stop companies from killing games!!! (EU and UK edition)

Tired of buying a $60 game that stops being functional a year later when big corp decides to pull the plug on its support? Tired of companies being able to brick things you own because they feel like it? Tired of beloved games becoming lost to time?

There is currently an initiative being pushed in both the EU and UK for game companies to be held accountable for keeping at LEAST some version of a game functionable.

The movement is currently in dire straits but has been gaining a ton of traction lately that could bring it back. If you are a resident of either, there's things you can sign to get things moving!!

While this movement only applies to Europe at the moment, it has the momentum to ripple outwards to other countries if we keep it alive and continue pushing back against companies that want to pulp games they don't deem lucrative enough.

Sign the Stop Killing Games Initiative

For the last decade or so, several videogame companies have designed their games in ways that leave them inoperable as soon as official support ends, with no way to restore them from the user's end. Make no mistake, this is planned obsolescence. No one expects companies to support their games forever, but the truth is that designing games to depend on centralised company servers is a strictly recent thing; most online games of the past (and several of the present too) gave players tools such as private server hosting or local multiplayer to allow continued use way past official support ended, simply because it was physically impossible to do otherwise.

Stop Killing Games is a consumer rights movement to enact legislation against this blatantly anti-consumer practice as well as promoting art preservation. Its current biggest avenue is through the Stop Destroying Games European Citizens' Initiative, which, should it gather enough signatures, would legally force the European Union to address the issue in court. The deadline is July 31st, 2025, and as of writing sits at ~79% of its goal.

There is also a UK petition which currently sits at ~84% of its goal and ends on July 14, 2025. It'll be considered for debate at the UK parliament if 100,000 signatures are gathered; not a guarantee but better than nothing.

As for folks who aren't EU or UK citizens, please be sure to spread the word. Even if not enacted everywhere, any success could spread over the world as companies are unlikely to neglect such a big portion of the market when they could simply just start development with a legislation-compliant end-of-life plan they could then sell everywhere. After all, remember when everything had different proprietary chargers incompatible with one another? Thank the EU for stopping that.

Why are we asking for Destiny 3 when the planned expansions for Destiny 2 are half-developed? Shouldn't we demand that SONY lets us finish dinner before we get dessert???

They promised us MORE with Frontiers, etc., and as the engine for their profits we should stand firm and hold them to those promises - and I for one don't want a THIRD game in the series that will just exist to be doomed to have a premature death.

LET THEM FINISH COOKING ON DESTINY 2 FIRST, YOU CORPO RAT BASTARDS. FINISH D2 PROPER OR NO MORE PROFITS FOR YOU.

StopKillingGames - EU people can help sign a petition that might have a chance at making devs have a plan for the end of life of a game. So even if the devs no longer support a game people who love it can keep playing.

In the 90s and early 2000s, players could keep and play games they bought indefinitely - either offline or on community run servers even after official support ended. Today, many games require constant online access, and once servers shut down, they become completely unplayable.
