The number of likes, comments, and retweets that a post receives influences how valuable a person feels about themselves. Sexual harassment, trolling, inflammatory memes, late-night timeline surfing, and cyberbullying all have an adverse effect on mental health and sleep. Alarmingly, trolling is a pretty common phenomenon. This emphasizes how important it is to comprehend why people troll.

Is It Really That Bad to Tweet at Authors Whose Books You Hated?

Have you ever found something on Twitter to be offensive? You're not alone, and the microblogging service topped the list of "most toxic apps," according to a recent SimpleTexting study. The majority of trolls, according to 38.1 percent of respondents, are on Twitter, followed by Facebook (26.9 percent) and Reddit (14.8%).

Trolls.

Why do people troll online? The same reason why your older sibling may irritate you. To gain a reaction. People tend to have certain characteristics to become a troll. But don't mistake this for trolls, the DreamWorks movie. We all know and love those cute creators. The trolls I am talking about are not cute musical creatures. These trolls use the internet in a nasty way to attack others online. I consider this to be a bully. An online bully if you will. So, if bullying is not allowed in schools and is socially not acceptable. Why is trolling not a criminal act? Trolling is a forum for cyberbullying. So why aren't more people being held accountable for their actions? Cyberbullying has caused many people to harm themselves and is dangerous to younger generations. So, if we are aware of the outcomes of trolling and cyberbullying, why is it still occurring? What are your thoughts on this?

Stop the Trolls and Cat Calling

After watching the Stop the Trolls: Women fight online harassment on Youtube and reading some articles about the #MeToo movement could move from social campaign to social change in my #MCO335 class. There have been situations that I have been in very similar to Ashley in the Stop the Trolls Youtube video where I have had vulgar or uncomfortable comments or catcalls online and in person. I give them a chance to reword what they have said to me by saying excuse me in a stern voice which does not really work all the time, they repeat what they said. I follow how Ashley says it, “ Would you talk like that with your daughter around.” Most of the time they get embarrassed and mutter something and walk away or they just shut down. It shows that a lot more people need to really think about things that they are going to say before they say them. In regards to the #MeToo movement I believe that it has helped many people voice their situations or situation that they have felt too scared or uncomfortable to bring to public attention. This has also helped make people realize that things that people say or do may not be a big deal to them but may seem like a big deal to someone else.

Elaboration of thoughts

We live in a world where we do not just live in the physical “real world,” but also simultaneously in the social media world online.  For those seeking to be malicious, unfortunately the Internet is like a grocery store for content that can feed that malicious behavior. On the Internet you can hide behind whatever username you create and say whatever to whomever without having to be face to face. This makes the Internet the perfect home for trolls. A place where they can hide behind a veil like the cowards they are, deliberately provoking others by saying offensive, hurtful things. A troll is somebody who is unhappy in their own life and needs to lash out at anybody who is successful and happy to validate themselves. Small, sad little trolls. If you happen to fall victim to a troll, here are some options: 

Block the trolls’ account.

Don’t Respond.

Report the troll to the social media platform and the police if necessary.

Disconnect from social media.

 Stay humble.
