Middle School Monday: Storm-Wake by Lucy Christopher 

A girl named Moss lives on a mysterious island with her father, and they’ve been living there ever since they escaped the floods that swept over the rest of the world. There are animals on this island, and lots of flowers with unusual healing properties. Different things wash up on this island, including strange creatures that probably don’t exist anywhere else. A wild boy named Callan becomes her first friend, and her relationship with him creates tension with her father. Callan opens her eyes to the possibility that her father isn’t always right. And later, when a young man washes up on her shore, Moss is going to question everything she ever knew about the island and the outside world. 

This fantasy story is loosely inspired by The Tempest by William Shakespeare, but it also stands on its own as an enchanting and thought-provoking story. Give this book to teens who love fantasy stories, books inspired by classics, and strange new worlds.
