The Rancho La Patera and Stow House Pioneer Days Program

California’s Goleta Valley Historical Society offers a range of educational programs at Rancho La Patera & Stow House, a historic ranch dating back to 1873. The flagship program is Pioneer Days, which the organization developed together with the Goleta Union School District as part of the third-grade curriculum. All public and private elementary schools on the South Coast can participate in the program. In the third grade, Goleta Valley students study local history. Pioneer Days gives them the opportunity to explore early California ranch life on a firsthand basis. The program combines demonstrations and fun activities that show students what life was like in the early 20th century. The activities encourage students to think about the contributions that various immigrant groups in California have made to the larger community. The program’s designers understand that children have different learning styles and have created a program that appeals to all modalities. In addition, Pioneer Days keeps in mind the unique needs of English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
