He is getting a lot of money from Donald Trump's use of the song, and he doesn't want anyone associating it with gay culture.
He’s going to have to sue Wikipedia…
Henri Belolo (music producer, from a 2000 interview with disco-disco.com): I was talking to the gay community about what they liked, what th
The inspiration for the song YMCA and The Village People clearly originated in New York gay culture of the late 1970s. It is not explicitly gay because anything explicitly gay was not allowed at the time. The lyrics were intentionally written to have a dual meaning: gay&sexual/straight/celebratory.
Thus, when the song was CULTURALLY APPROPRIATED by major league baseball teams, the gay undertone of the lyrics was invisible to the straight sports audience. YMCA became a well-liked popular song universally enjoyed at weddings, bar mitzvahs, and sporting events. Which is why the trump campaign APPROPRIATED it for trump’s political rallies.
This is also the reason a co-author and MAGA are attempting to STRAIGHTWASH the song by denying its original inspiration and popularity in GAY DISCOS. Just another example of how CULTURAL APPROPRIATION serves the interest of the dominant class by ERASING the CULTURE & HISTORY of minority groups.
So tell me again how these guys don’t look gay…
The Insidious Erasure of Straightwashing
I, too, am aware of the irony of realising I never posted about this video essay to tumblr on the same day I find out the news about the UNHINGED decision by netflix to make dorian and basil BROTHERS in their adaptation of the picture of dorian gray - but there you go...
watch my prophetic-ass video essay here i guess
What upsets me about Spock being straightwashed is that since it isn't officially ""canon"" that he's gay, writers can keep getting away with it. But if the OG Spock wasn't gay-coded, then why are modern writers so frantic to distance themselves from any aspect of him that could be construed as queer? Why so quick to run away from the (LONG and complex) history of the character? Why so insistent on proving his attraction to women (particularly, women he clearly expressed disinterest in, in TOS). Why so afraid of his undying love and devotion to the captain?
It's not just heterosexual writing, it's aggressively heterosexual writing. It's taking a sexually ambiguous character and assigning heterosexuality to him because they are afraid of the alternatives. It's a subtle retcon that is anything but subtle to queer audiences.
I'm sick of reboots because these people don't know how to handle a character like that with any tact. Spock meant a LOT to a LOT of minorities and it really does just piss me off that gay interpretations get written off as NonsenseTM for no reason that doesn't more or less boil down to good-old-fashioned homophobia. Straight is NOT the default damnit.
No more reboots please, it's like they took our homie Spock and sent him through conversion therapy and I'm disgusted. I can't watch. I am angry. You haven't seen the last of me venting on this topic I promise
I'm going to cry wth is this

Archive 81 created such a beautiful and interesting world and the Netflix show demolished it so thoughtlessly. I will now be begging people to listen to the podcast.
Also a bunch of people on Twitter who liked the podcast and haven’t watched the show yet are like “yay! My favorite podcast is a show now! Do TMA next! Do Old Gods next!” Please no. Please don’t let Netflix straight iron more podcasts I love.
I can and will write straight Lisa, which is at least as valid as gay Lisa, which is to say that it is not canon but I find it intriguing as a possibility
I'd say something about how smugbug shippers should give up their petty squabbles and join with us against the true enemy, but I'm recklessly curious who the heck you'd straight-ship Lisa with.
Age gap this, sibling-coded that, the real enemy in fanfic is people who take a same-sex pairing and change one of them to the “opposite” sex to make it a cishet pairing instead.
Look, I fully agree that people can ship and write what they want, but there is something uniquely shitty about taking a queer love story and going “You know what would make this better? If they weren’t queer.”
(If you think otherwise, block me and go make your own fucking post. Bet you if it was people rewriting a Black character as white the shittiness of this act would be clear as day to you.)
