Richard is an excellent cook, but by his own admission, has never been much of a baker. The first year he tried to bake Xan a cake for their birthday, they were turning eight years old. It was only the second birthday they had spent with him—only the second birthday they’d ever celebrated. When the first attempt fell flat ( quite literally, because it came out of the oven looking like a pancake ), he tried another three times to get it right. Xan helped. Although they never quite succeeded—the second one, notably, tasted too much like baking soda, because Rich hoped that would make it rise—Xan enjoyed every effort, carefully weighing out the ingredients on the ancient set of scales usually relegated to the back of the kitchen cupboard, licking batter off the spoon when their uncle’s back was turned, and laughing when Richard got flour all over his face. 

But what makes it the happiest it the happiest memory of all is that fact that, for the first time in their life, someone loved them enough to keep trying, to make the day good for them.

Alex looked at her, the queen of a kingdom where Magic could be practiced. Even if ti was with a watchful eye. It was almost enough to earn a little trust but not quite. Alex sat next to her at the banquet table, still covered int he thick black blood of the last creature they had killed. She had no right to be here, this was far from her comfort zone. She liked to be outside, beneath the starlight sky where she could feel the cold to her bones and breathe fresh air.  

She leant back in her chair to watch the party over the glow of the open fire in the middle of the room. Her husband, quizzing her brothers on ancient magic he was desperate to understand. The emissary, the warrior and the king all deep in their own conversation. A charming prince and a beautiful princess sending loving looks at each other over the sweet treats between them. Something like friendship, something like a crowd of people she could rely on.

If only her life worked like that.

     “ Fate isn’t fixed. My dad used to say that, when I was small. Whatever you say, it’s not written until it has happened.”

She didn’t need to know whatever vision was on the horizon, good or bad. Her legs kicked up over the side of the chair, pulling the goblet of wine to her mouth as the corners turned up in a soft smile.

There weren’t going to be many more nights like this for a while. It wasn’t the northern lights, or the joys of home but it was close enough.

    “ Living for any time other than now will only bring you pain.”
