Sewing – A Kids Hobby That’s Fun and Useful!
Written by: Sally Writes
Children can be so fickle. What’s popular one day, is less so the next and it can be hard to keep up! But, finding a hobby that your kids will enjoy and keep coming back to, is something that many parents dream of and we think we’ve got the perfect one – sewing!
Sewing is a hobby that can be a lot of fun for children, it’s also beneficial to their development, as well as being a very useful skill to have. So, give us a chance and read on to discover the beauty of sewing as a child’s hobby.
It Fosters Creativity and Recycling
Many children are naturally creative which is great. But, they can also get stuck doing the same thing over and over, like drawing, coloring or painting. While all of these are wonderful things to do, they can cause mess and the work they produce often ends up thrown in the bin.
With sewing, that’s rarely the case. Provided you get your children the right sewing machine or needle size for their age and needs, they can sew a variety of fabrics, with a multitude of colors and patterns. And, if they don’t like what they’ve done? They can unpick it and start again!
Sewing Can Help Fine Motor Skills
Developing fine motor skills in children is an important part of their growing up. It helps them hold a pencil and is useful in many other skills they will need as they grow. Sewing – both by hand and with a child-friendly machine – helps enhance those skills, as the needle requires a certain grip, as does threading a needle, moving a dial and arranging material.
Build Relationships with Older Relatives
By encouraging your children to take up sewing as a hobby, it could also help stimulate the relationship between them and their grandparents.
Lots of grandparents like to feel useful and love spending time with their grandchildren, so a sewing hobby could be the perfect way to combine the two. This could work particularly well if you don’t have a particular love for sewing but one - or both - of your parents does.
Handmade Gifts
Another benefit of your child taking up sewing as a hobby, is that they can hand make gifts for family and friends – if they want to. Encourage them to start small. But, once your child has made one or two gifts that have met with success, they can become more confident and consider slightly more ambitious projects.
Grandparents could receive monogrammed handkerchiefs, cousins could get blankets or dresses for their toys and aunties could be inundated with lovely Christmas decorations – all lovingly made by your little sewer!
Mention it and Gauge the Reaction
If you’re not too sure how interested your little one will be about sewing, it’s always worth having a chat about it. Or, if there’s a local sewing workshop, you could both attend and see your child’s response. If it’s positive you could be on to a winner.
But remember, hobbies don’t always last and after a year or so, sewing might take more of a back seat in your child’s life. And that’s totally fine – at least you will have tried. You’ll also have given your child the knowledge and ability to sew – which is sure to prove useful in the future!
