Drinking on the Job

              Every once in awhile, I land one of those assignments that would make me jealous of myself if I wasn't already the one sitting on a barstool sipping craft cocktails and billing them to someone else. In this case, that was the City Paper and their handy little bar guide, SWIG. It may just be my favorite publication to write for.  This year, I dug into the best Mexican-inspired cocktails around Charleston. And surprisingly, the best ones I found were not in places that begin with an 'El' or 'La.' Alas, ole.

Hey Kim Jong Un... I don't want to live in a silo

           It took me about a year and a half to get over reading Cormac McCarthy's The Road. No, I haven't seen the movie. The book was just about the most damn disturbing thing I've ever subjected myself to over three consecutive nights of reading, because a few pages in, sleep isn't even an option.  So it was with some hesitation that I began reading the latest dystopian saga to run up the best-seller list, Hugh Howey's Wool. I got about halfway through in time for my interview with the author on Monday, and hell if it isn't a page turner. Best of all, this time I'm not at all freaked out - just intrigued by a great storyline. Righchus Goes to Austin

        Hey, watch this video.  That's local rapper Righchus, and the song and video were featured at SXSW last week. Which is just the latest in a series of big things for Charleston-bred filmmaker Taylor Engel and local artist Matt Bostik (aka Righchus). Read all about their work in my Charleston Scene story here.
