Lower Dens - "To Die in L.A."
I don't know how I feel about this complete shift from their usual lax-anguish and meditative tempos to an accelerated and almost hopeful tone?
This reminds me a bit of the transformation Beach House had when they came out with 2012's Bloom. This song reminds me of LeGrand's almost larger-than-life yearning with spacey big-picture sounds on Bloom. But it could also be that in this track, Lower Dens' Frontwoman Jana Hunter definitely has some similar deep throaty-vocals like LeGrand's trademark. But in this song, Hunter sounds fresh and new from her previous material.
I saw Lower Dens live back in my college days in Pittsburgh one night and they were as great and mesmerizing live as you would hope. I remember two of the band mates had the same orange crop haircut and both were very approachable. It was a good night. They personally sold me the record (during that time, for Twin-Hand Movement, 2010 .
Regardless of my thoughts on the track, the new album Escape From Evil releases 3/31 via Ribbon Music. They've keep a low profile since their relatively successful and good NooTropics release back in 2012- I played it when I was still DJing! I really liked "Brains" on that -
Oh by the way there's a hot rumour that there's an album for Beach House on the horizon too for 2015 TBA.
