Cold Composition
Cold Composition (or strike-on) is a term used to describe ways of setting type via a keyboard directly to paper. The typewriter is the simplest and most common example. Despite appearances, the qwerty keyboard is not designed for fast typing: the most commonly used letters are placed under the weakest fingers in order to prevent the mechanism jamming. The keyboard used today on PCs or Macs to perform typesetting tasks has the benefit of a century-old practice.
Olivetti Typewriter
Pictured is an Olivetti Studio45 typewriter. It is in good working condition so I will be using it in the student workshop I am planning in few weeks.
Olivetti was founded as a typewriter manufacturing company by Camillo Olivetti in 1908 in Italy, is considered one of the leading manufacturers of the mid-20th century. Recognising the importance of design over pure functionalism, the company produced some of the most iconic hand-typing devices and early computers of the 20th century.
