The tea he had been enjoying quite calmly as he sat staring at the garden swiftly made it’s way down the wrong pipe and ended with Shikamaru hacking a cough. He slammed a hand on his chest in response, eyes watering as he tried to catch his breath again.
“Warn a man when you’re going to pull a stunt like that...” he griped, shaking his head and sighing. Sometimes he wondered if she liked being so troublesome just to make him squirm.

He is grateful that his aunt had been closely in tow... His and his team’s injuries were significantly lessened due to her intervention, but Shinki did not come out unscathed.

Gaara smiles a smile that still only his family bears witness to; it is gentle and calm, yet there is a hint of sadness in his eyes that only Temari would be able to notice. She leaves for Konoha for good later that day, now the wife of Shikamaru and Sunagakure’s Ambassador in every way. She is happy and he can see it in the way she grins at him, in the way tears threaten to spill from her eyes.
She is too strong to cry like this, he knows, but even she has too much love in her heart for her brothers to not be saddened by leaving. He grasps his beloved sister’s hand and gives a reassuring squeeze. Gaara knows this is the right choice, as does she and Kankurou.

Looking up from the book he had been pouring over at his desk, Shikadai fixed his gaze upon his mother as she entered the room, studying her for a moment before he let a weary smile creep onto his lips. With the chunin exams creeping up upon him, the words of encouragement caught that little kernel of doubt that was growing in his mind and prevented it from growing any bigger, at least for the moment. He had always felt a pressure to do well and live up to his family names, being a child of two important, powerful families, so the reassurances helped ease his burden for a time.
Folding his book closed, he rose to his feet and crossed the room to join her. Arms encircled her waist as he offered a hug, affection not his usual go-to but feeling relevant in this moment. “Thanks Mum, I needed that. Guess I was thinking a bit too hard about what’s coming up...”
