Kangding Ray - OR
mnml ssg's good-bye letter succeeded in offering one more new discovery for me before the curtains fall - one Kangding Ray, whose work encapsulates much of what initially attracted me to electronic music. OR, released by Raster-Norton in 2011, presents a narrative of delicate space, immense sound sculpture, black magic grooves, and encompassing noir atmosphere that further suggests how truly damned dystopian the current creative climate has become.
in line with my favorite release of this year (though without as diverse a palette as Porter's), OR works best as one piece. 'Athem' opens with rattling intensity, 'La belle' closes with a broken heart. In between, a grand cinema reels techno propaganda for a band of complacent, annoyed, and distracted youths. Kangding Ray curates a dismal projection of what-is-to-come with the freneticism of a patriot against invasion; his latest release with Stroboscopic Artifacts sounds as if he's the only man left fighting.
