A series of explosions rocked Stromboli, an Italian volcano, this Wednesday. Here's what happened, how it tracks with Stromboli's past, and what to expect in the future.

“Much to the delight of tourists and volcanologists, Stromboli tends to do this several times a day, come rain or shine. If you stay on the island, you’ll regularly hear booms as the volcano lets off a little pressure every couple of hours or so. As this fountaining lights up the sea at night, it’s been rather beautifully christened the 'Lighthouse of the Mediterranean'. Its dramatic pyrotechnics proved to be quite inspirational to some fellow named Tolkien, who sailed past it in the 1920s and soon afterwards came up with the idea for Mount Doom.“
