Santa Maria dell'Isola, Tropea, Italy: The church of Santa Maria dell'Isola (VII-VIII century) stands in Tropea, on the rock of the same name. The sanctuary stands on a sandstone rock called Isola, because it was once completely surrounded by the sea: a perfect position for contemplative retreat, so much so that in the Middle Ages it was a refuge for hermits and Byzantine monks..
