The medieval village of Stroncone is located outside Terni, perched on a hill at 450 metres above sea level and rising above the plentiful olive groves that surround it. It may be small in size, but Stroncone is steeped in history thanks to its many monuments dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Take, for example, Piazza della Libertà (see the second photo) with its beautiful 16th-century fountain. Head through the imposing stone gate, topped by the coat of arms of the municipality, and you'll enter a small square that seems very much like being inside the courtyard of a castle. Memories of playing the Legend of Zelda video game series as a child came flooding back as soon as I'd seen the ancient well positioned in the corner. As is the common theme in Umbria, churches dominate this ancient village, and the one that really ought to visited is the Chiesa di San Giovanni Decollato, a jewel of art and architecture from the first half of the 15th century, with frescoes depicting stories of the life of the Saint. And have a wander down the many delightful alleyways that branch off 'Via Gregorio Contessa' that are replete in gates and arches.
