A basket with an infant inside wrapped in a delicate pink blanket was left outside the island home. The doorbell rang and the infant was left inside. It was raining and chilly. The infant wailed and wailed crying for her mother. She was a precious thing, just barely a few hours old.
The mother heard a baby crying outside of her door and quickly jumped to get her robe on. Mother Pearl opened her door and saw the basket on the front porch, wondering who could have gotten here and why they left their baby out in the rain.
"Oh dear, come here little one…" she scooped up the infant, it was a baby girl with tan skin and dark brown hair, and she was making the saddest face that Mother Pearl had ever seen.
"Aw come now, don’t give me those crocodile tears, everything is alright little one…" she held the baby close to her and brought her inside, coddling her and kissing her forehead.
"You are hardly a day old! Who could abandon such a precious little thing like you?"
