What is the SE exam?
If you want to become a licensed Structural Engineer (SE) in the States, you need to take the SE Exam. This exam uses different vertical and lateral components to examine your ability to safely design buildings, dams, or bridges, especially in earthquake-prone zones.
Not every civil engineer chooses to become an SE because they choose to become a PE. A PE license allows them to design up to a risk category and height. If you want to design skyscrapers or high-risk structures, you will need to check the requirements of your state
Which exam should you take: SE Vs. PE
A structural engineer can have two licenses. Either a structural engineering license (abbreviated to S.E.) or a civil engineering license designated as a P.E.
Requirements to become a PE are:
● A four-year bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
● Four years of experience in the field
● Must have passed an 8-hour Fundamentals of Engineering exam and an 8-hour Professional Engineers exam
