VECTOR Gallery featured in NY NATIVE

As the director of one of JJ’s band’s music videos a few years back, I have to admit that his imagery and ideas about cult ideology made me uncomfortable—but that’s coming from a old school NYC punk rock guy. The more I got to know JJ, the more I understood that that was the point. Now, he’s opened his church on the Lower East Side, which is like nothing else going on in the art scene today. That’s the thing about JJ’s art: By diving into darkness, it forces its audience to reevaluate their ideas about truth. Is Charles Manson Jesus Christ? I highly suggest checking out JJ’s gallery, Vector.

The OZ Project BY CH Creations
PRESS: What is Highline Zoo? Project by Betten, Bae, Braunstein
Wandering by the assortment of what seem to be poster board cutouts of scribbly animals around 27th street on The High Line park always draws my attention. The mural behind the animals was created by artist Jordan Betten and has been there for a bit longer than the cutouts, but what the heck are the animals and where did they come from? Going to the website address written just under the mural takes you to Betten's own site, a shameless self-promotion, but in truth The High Line Zoo is a project by artists Sun Bae, Jordan Betten and Stuart Braunstein (nice alliteration action there). The 'zoo' which includes cutout sculptures of monkeys, a giraffe, an elephant, a gorilla, an owl and a bear, was put up on April 19th and will play host to a series of musical and video performances on the third Thursday of the coming months. Between the performances, the space is exactly what it appears to be, cutouts of animals in hanging out on a roof and a balcony in an urban zoo.

PRESS: Highline Zoo with Jordan Betten and Stuart Braunstein
If you walk the High Line park at night, you’ll see emus, elephants and psychedelic monkeys in mid-swing, all aglow. And this is without the use of hallucinogens. A group of artists including Sun Bae, Stuart Braunstein and Jordan Betten have transformed a Chelsea rooftop, between West 27th and 28th Streets, into a glowing sculpture garden with sound and video.
Mr. Betten’s graffiti—a white and turquoise rectangular mural of scribbled faces, which has been visible from the High Line for some time—now serves as a backdrop for this urban zoo, which gets activated with a music and dance performance on the third Thursday of every month.
As you walk amongst the charging masses at the High Line, getting a glimpse of these animals on parade, you might begin to wonder who’s looking at who.
Thanks to Curbed for bringing this story to our attention.
