The rain pounded against the windows. He noticed your jaw tighten in discomfort. long, heavy, persistent drops.
You sat on the edge of your bed, your hands clasped together, staring at a non-existent spot on the wall.
You hadn't cried yet.
That was the most dangerous part.
You had been feeling the weight on your chest for weeks.
That feeling.
That poisonous tingling at the back of your neck.
Steve knew you too well.
And that's why he was the first to notice.
He had learned to read your every microexpression as if they were letters printed on his skin.
The way you clenched your jaw when you were uncomfortable.
The way your shoulders tensed when you sensed danger.
How do you avoid eye contact when something hurts you?
Steve loved you from a place that didn't know how to be small.
They had started as partners.
Then as allies.
Then as people who always sought each other out in a crowded room.
Until one day, without ceremony, without speeches, they simply could no longer conceive of a world where the other did not exist.
When Bucky returned, not as the Winter Soldier, but as a man trying to rebuild himself, you were one of the few people who didn't look at him with fear.
You offered him coffee.
You gave him space.
You talked to him about simple things.
Music.
Weather.
Books.
Bad movies.
And without realizing it, he began to trust you.
Steve noticed.
Of course, he noticed.
But he wasn't jealous.
Because he trusted you.
Because he trusted Bucky.
And that was the first mistake.
The night everything changed, there was no dramatic music.
A long mission.
Superficial wounds.
Exhausted nerves.
Steve went to take a shower first.
You went into the kitchen.
Bucky was already there.
With an open beer.
His eyes were lost.
“You shouldn't be alone,” he murmured.
“Neither should you.”
You leaned on the counter.
He wasn't looking at you.
“Sometimes I think I don't deserve to be here,” he said. “Not with you guys. Not in this world.”
“That's not true.”
“Steve thinks it is.”
“And so do I.”
“You believe too many things.”
You moved closer.
One step.
Just one.
He looked at you then.
And something broke.
When his hand brushed yours, neither of you pulled away.
That was the second mistake.
The kiss happened as accidents happen.
Fast.
Clumsy.
Full of guilt even before it existed.
And when they separated, they both knew they had crossed a point of no return.
Breathless.
The real hell began after that.
Because it didn't stop.
It turned into furtive encounters.
Into meaningful glances.
Into shared silences.
Into hands that brushed “by accident.”
Each time, you swore it would be the last.
It never was.
Steve was still good to you.
He still kissed your forehead.
He still held your hand.
He still trusted you.
That's what hurt the most.
You were becoming something you hated.
Bucky was destroying himself again.
And Steve was living a perfect lie.
Until the truth found its way out.
It always does.
Steve didn't see them kissing.
He didn't see them naked.
He didn't see them hugging.
He heard them.
From the hallway.
Your voice.
Broken.
“I can't keep doing this.”
Bucky's voice.
“Me neither.”
Silence.
“But I can't leave you.”
Steve didn't come in.
He didn't yell.
He didn't hit anything.
He just stood there.
While something inside him slowly died.
When you walked into the room that night, Steve was sitting on the bed.
His gaze was empty.
“Tell me the truth.”
“I betrayed you.”
Steve nodded slowly, as if he had known all along.
“With him?”
“Yes.”
A deep breath.
“How long?”
“Too long.”
Steve stood up.
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't cry.
That was worse.
“You two were my home.”
Silence.
“And you both destroyed it.”
He left.
That night.
And nothing was ever the same again.
Bucky asked to be reassigned.
You stayed.
But it wasn't a life.
Steve stopped looking at you.
Stopped talking to you.
Of existing with you.
Months later, Steve spoke to you for the first time.

Summary:
Against the backs of his eyelids, appearing from a nothingness Steve would never be able to describe, it takes him by surprise. Eyes, a sharp gray stark as the cracks in the cockpit windows, skin a startling pink hue as if burnt from a non-existent sun.
A face. A man?

Summary:
Bucky had wanted to laugh in his face when, after they stepped out of the restaurant, his date asked a hesitant, “So, uh, how ‘bout a drink? At yours?” Neither of them bothered with the pretense as soon as they made it past the threshold.
It’d been good. More than. Still is, in that unselfconscious post-coital haze, until the loose set of limbs wrapped around him tenses, the moment Bucky asks, “You’re him, aren’t you?”
In an unexpected twist of fate, a familiar face enters Bucky’s new life in Bucharest.

Summary:
Look, the florist—Steve, he learns soon enough—is hot, okay? And he’s nice. And he’s (somewhat) age appropriate for once, which is a rarity given Bucky’s track record.
But it’s said track record that assures him the flowers Bucky’s picking up for his ma won’t even be close to dying before his fling with Steve fizzles out.
Bucky’s all but given up on his (love) life, when he meets a florist by the name of Steve Rogers.

Summary:
Steve’s into minute two of debating swallowing his pride and getting Crust Away (who’s he kidding? He always cuts the crusts off his sandwiches) when he hears two very distinct voices from the next aisle over.
“I could barely fit it in my mouth,” the first voice whisper shouts, earning a hissed grimace from his companion. “How the fuck am I supposed to—”
“Okay, you don’t have to fit it all in your mouth at once!”
Steve’s brows rise without his say so, compelled to tune in against his better judgement.
An overheard conversation at a grocery store on one fateful morning.

@steverogersbingo D1 Height Difference
@stuckybingo N3 Free Space
Summary:
Filling up an empty mansion has always been Tony’s preferred method of coping, after booze and busty blonds. Steve would fucking know.
It’s probably why he finds the half-dressed stranger out back the most unexpected surprise yet. Long, dark hair, only the slightest hint of a stubble, and a lean swimmer’s build about half a foot shorter than Steve’s own 6’2”. And, most notably, encased in nothing more than a pair of turquoise booty shorts—not at all Tony’s type.
Steve, on the other hand, can’t quite tear his eyes away from the view.
A drive up the coast leads Steve straight into Bucky Barnes’ orbit.
A take on Steve Rogers having a bit of a type, which Bucky of course falls squarely in. Read now on AO3!
