How I Cope with The School Shooting Epidemic as I Study to Become a High-School Teacher...
I remember when I graduated high-school in 2018, I was grateful that my school never endured an active shooter. No lives were lost in the hallways where I walked for four years. My school was fortunate. So many school across the United States have hallways, even after the bleach, that are permanently stained with death.
I am lucky still. No shootings have happened at my community college... (yet?).
And now I am pursuing a Bachelor’s in English with a Secondary-Level Teaching License. I also am hoping to be accepted into the Linked Master’s Program focusing on Linguistics. If all goes as planned, I will graduate college in the Spring of 2023.
Ideally, by Fall 2023 I will be in a high-school teaching English. And as exciting as that is, the reality is that I am also, in a way, very scared.
I am not scared of being at the front of a classroom.
I am not scared of being a “bad” teacher.
I am not scared of beginning a new chapter in my life.
As far as the job description, I believe it is in this line of work that I have found my calling.
What I am scared of, however, is the constant threat of classroom massacre. I am scared that my students will die in front of me or I will die in front of them. It is absolutely terrifying to think about how often people die while trying to learn...
I cope with some sort of hopefulness. I try to cope by hoping that things will change within the next few years. I am hopeful when I go to the ballot box and vote.
I cope by facing the music. This is life today. I know that teaching is what I was meant to do in this life as a professional, and just as people have risked their lives for their passions since the dawn of time, I will do the same. We need teachers more than ever for so, so many reasons. I have to be one of the people to step up during this crisis, and I have to not only hope for change, but manifest it.
I will spark change by being positive. I will spark change by studying very hard right now. I will spark change by voting. I will spark change by being brave. I will spark change by becoming a teaching professional. I will spark change by focusing on mental health at my school. I will spark change by being kind.
Overall, I have made peace with where I am going and what I am planning to do. It is up to us to heal these wounds, protect the children, and put a stop to this violence.
Well, it took 4 years, but, the other night, we lost one of my former students. (My school has lost students before, but this is the first time that it's one of mine.) He was killed in a fireworks accident. It's extra sad because he had dropped out of school but he had finally found a direction he wanted to take his life in. He was working a steady job and working towards his GED or trade school or something (I forget what exactly). He was one of those who was SO SMART but didn't recognize his own abilities because of how the system had failed him. He dropped out, but he wasn't going to let the system's failure stop him. And, by God, that boy ALWAYS had a smile on his face.
Lost a student from my university. I didn't know him well but he had the most beautiful way with words, and I loved hearing him perform is original works at open mic nights. I'd always see him around campus. Met him at a football game his first semester here.
He was an international student from Egypt. He had a family, who now have lost their husband and father. He came for a masters, planning on getting a doctorate after. Friendly with everyone, a good TA, and a great guy.
He will be missed.
