NEC Prep is very excited for our upcoming Contemporary Festival this weekend Feb 3-5, 2017! Composer Judd Greenstein will be in residence, and many student compositions will also be featured! Today we would like to introduce another of our student composers, Bram Fisher, who tells us about his experiences and standout moments as a young composer. Check out one of Bram's latest works, "Concert Music," this Saturday Feb 4th at 12pm in NEC's Jordan Hall! The work will be performed by NEC Prep Youth Symphony Orchestra directed by Steven Karidoyanes. Bram Fisher, 16, has been composing and improvising since he was six years old. He currently studies composition with Rodney Lister in the NEC Preparatory School, where he also studies viola and clarinet and plays viola in the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a four-time finalist of the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Competition (2012-2015) and in 2016 was designated an Emerging Composer in the Tribeca New Music Competition and a finalist in the National Young Composers Challenge. J. B. Clancy The NEC Prep Contemporary Festival is coming up next week, Feb. 3-5, 2017! Composer Judd Greenstein will be in residence and also many student compositions will be featured! Our next featured student composer is John Barron Clancy, who shares his experiences composing and performing his own compositions: Barron Clancy has been taking violin lessons with NEC Prep faculty Susan Jarvis for six years. He is currently playing with Peter Jarvis' 8 am String Training Orchestra (STO) and with Milton's Pierce Middle School orchestra and chamber orchestra, led by Debra Thoresen. Barron has been studying Composition at NEC with Rodney Lister for the past year. In addition to writing music for class, Barron arranged Concerning Hobbits (by Howard Shore, from Lord of the Rings) for string orchestra last year, with input from his teachers along the way. The Milton High School chamber orchestra, conducted by Ms. Thoresen, played his arrangement at their spring concert and invited Barron to play the piece with them. Barron spends much of his free time composing. He adapted a Rondo from his composition class as a wedding gift for family friends who play oboe and cello. They learned it and played it for him - which was much better than hearing it on Finale playback. One of Barron’s favorite memories include meeting Boston Pops conductor, Keith Lockhart, at a Joslin Diabetes fundraiser reception at the Pops – he was coming from a composition lesson and Maestro Lockhart took some time to look at Barron’s work with him. Today's featured composer is NEC Prep student, Audrey Wu! Audrey Wu, Composer: Audrey Wu is currently a freshman at The Winsor School in Boston, Massachusetts. She is passionate about all types of music, ranging from punk-rock to French impressionism to world music to minimalism. She had started composing about two years ago, and has recently been enjoying focusing more time on it and taking lessons at the New England Conservatory. She has been studying piano for nine years now. Last summer, she attended the Montecito International Music Festival in Los Angeles, California. This semester, she has recently taken up percussion lessons at NEC.
