Presidential platform analysis (less fancy than it sounds)

See below for our thoughts on each Presidential candidate's egoistical bragging bios and platforms.

Aaron Bailey

We would love to know what a "more genuine culture of engagement" looks like. Does this mean banning disingenuous election candidates? Our paranoia sees an unintended subtle attack at V for V.

There's something... very Don Cherry about that tie. 

"If elected, I intend to remind the AMS that it is a STUDENT government." I guess if you put something in ALL CAPS then that automatically makes it less vague and wishy-washy.

Wait what "re-establishing ACF" omfgzzz can we haz nao plz? It's not like the AMS is running massive financial defecits and can barely afford to run Block Party as it is.

"Work to increase accessibility to student and university executives"—because we're sure David Farrar will jump right on that plan.

Cheneil Antony-Hale

For someone everyone planned to discount as a one-issue candidate, she might just have the most diverse and tangible platform of the extensive selection of three candidates that we have.

"Keep it real with Cheneil..." There seems to be some coordinated effort here to make genuineness a theme this year.

"Tell your friends, tell your TA's, tell your family, and tell your cat..." New attack ad: Cheneil hates dogs.

"An overhaul of the internal AMS structure to make it more responsive to the needs of students and clubs." Like that whole "governance review" thing the AMS is already thinking of [not doing]?

I guess I really do need to finally go read (and by read, I mean watch, because, like, that textbook stack isn't getting any shorter) V for Vendetta.

Exclusive: Marjan Hatai on her decision to withdraw from VPX race

"After a lot of personal reflection, I realized that I was much more passionate about being a part of Senate and making a difference in the academic world of the university. Given the time commitment and responsibilities that come with being on Senate, I decided that it would be best for the Society for me to focus my energy in one place, and that my efforts would be of most benefit as a Student Senator." – Marjan Hatai, on her decision to withdraw from the VP External race in the AMS elections.

#IAmABlog doesn't fully feel satisfied with Hatai's explanation, as we are unsure how her motivations may have swung so quickly regarding VP External. We can't help but wonder what other interests may have been at work here, but we respect her decision to withdraw from the race and leave Jude Crasta as the presumptive winner. We also applaud her ability to sneak in a tad bit of semi-subtle pre-campaigning in her statement.

Fantasy elections: our AMS dream team

Unfortunately you don't get to chose your AMS candidates, but we've taken the time of assemble our dream team of AMS Execs.

President: Maximus Decimus Meridius

This is the AMS's 100th anniversary. The New SUB is opening(?). Tuition's going up. We need a visionary and a leader right about now.

Roman gladiator Maximus Decimus Meridius was robbed once of the throne, and should not be again. The Emperor we need, but not the one we deserve.

We felt Frank Underwood would have been timely and appropriate, but ultimately too obvious of a choice.

Vice-President, Academic and University Affairs: Stephen J. Toope

We always hear how UBC's governance structure is just too complex and filled with insiders for us to get anything done. Former UBC President Stephen J. Toope would have everything we need to make change happen.

Vice-President, Administration: Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin

With a proven track record of pulling the Russian Olympics together at the last moment, we think Vladimir Putin has what it takes to make the #NewSUB #NeverSUB open on time.

Vice-President, External: Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus

Transit is a key issue to students right about now and we need someone familiar with it. We trust The Magic School Bus's Ms. Frizzle to know what's what with the 99 B-Line.

Vice-President, Finance: Kevin O'Leary

We feel like the AMS faces some serious financial woes. We need a VP Finance who loves money enough not to want to spend it left and right. Kevin O'Leary, your time is now.
