Essay proposal
My essay will focus on the subject matter of ‘Gender’ as although my current project is about the pressure on women to get married, at its base level it is an issue of gender. I have chosen four artists who I think all take a different approach to the subject; Collier Schorr, Wolfgang Klaus Maria Friedrich, Yoko Ono and Tracey Emin. Collier Schorr deals with the male gender from a female perspective, whilst Friedrich does the opposite, Yoko Ono’s ‘Cutting piece’ looks at the way in which women are treated like pieces of meat and so makes a classic feminist point, whilst although we may not think of Emin’s work being primarily about gender, there is an argument to be made that she is breaking down barriers of what the media think a female should be and how she should behave. Most of these artists work in multi-media and so it cannot be fully connected to my work or disconnected from it, although there is a time based element to most of them, something I am just starting to explore in my own work.
