Soe Yu Nwe is a burmese chinese artist, born 1989, she graduated with an MFA in ceramics from Rhode Island school of Design (RIsD). Soe Yu Nwe’s cultural duality helps her to create really beautiful sculpture taking influence from chinese heritage and the local burmese influence. ‘Local animistic beliefs, folklores and mythologies inspire the imagery in my work. I am particularly interested in the female figures in Buddhist mythologies.’ ‘Her experience of living cross-culturally has inspired her to reflect upon her own identity through making, conceiving it as a fluid, fragile and fragmented entity. Through transfiguration of her emotional landscape by poetically depicting nature and body in parts, she ponders the complexities of individual identity in this rapidly changing globalized society’ Soe Yu Nwe (2020). Retrieved 16th November,2020, From: https://www.soeyunwe.com/bio-contact Soe Yu Nwe’s work is really important to me, although my work isn’t mainly focused on sculpture Soe Yu Nwe’s focus on burmese and chinese culture is comforting, i guess it’s like representation. There are burmese artists out there and the culture i take from is not some made up thing, it’s real and tangable. sounds dumb but to see someone else taking influence from their cultures which is also part of my cultures is kind of empowering.
