Movie stars Jason Momoa, Taika Waititi and Cliff Curtis buy Auckland film and TV studio
It's official: A group of A-list Hollywood movie stars have bought a legendary West Auckland film and television production facility.
Studio West, a production facility in Glen Eden, has been acquired by Āriki Group Ltd, a company owned by US star Jason Momoa and local powerhouses Taika Waititi and Cliff Curtis, Screen Guild NZ has announced.
The deal was a defining moment for the country’s screen industry, and would strengthen New Zealand’s position as a hub for culturally grounded, internationally connected film and TV production, the guild said.
The new owners had the ability to bring projects to Aotearoa, and were genuinely invested in the growth of the film industry, she said.
Under Āriki Group’s stewardship the studio is also expected to foster opportunities for indigenous storytelling, talent development, and long-term industry growth.
In the guild statement, Waititi said he was thrilled to be part of the venture, especially as it will be a Polynesian-led studio.
“We’re bringing our experience from working overseas back home to create jobs and opportunities for the industry here, and importantly, for Polynesian talent and creators.
“It’s about ownership, creative control, and building a space where our community can lead in the industry.”
Curtis said he and his co-owners were united by a shared commitment to telling authentic local stories alongside independent artists from their own communities.
“Studio West is the natural home for this vision. With some of the newest studios, offices and facilities in the country, it provides a strong foundation for what we are building.
“At its core, this is about ownership, creative control, and building a strong economic base ‒ creating a platform where our communities can lead, shape, and share their stories with the world."
Numerous local and international productions have been filmed at the studio over the years, including classics such as Under The Mountain, The Convert, and Xena: Warrior Princess.
It was the primary filming location for cult US show Power Rangers for nearly 20 years, and recent credits include Momoa’s 2025 series Chief of War and M3GAN 2.0.
Last year it was reported that a group led by Curtis, and involving Momoa and Waititi, were in talks to buy the Auckland Council-owned Auckland Film Studios in Henderson.
But the talks did not lead to a sale with the council confirming earlier this year that Auckland Film Studios Limited, part of the Xytech Group, had bought the studio.
