It Will Be Exhilarating
A quote from this book that particularly stood out to me was, “Make something great because you care deeply about it. Make something because you stay awake at night thinking about it. Make something because you feel invigorated when you work on it, and anxious when you don’t.” Tom and Dan didn’t create the Glif as a get-rich-quick scheme, but rather, they made it to fulfill a need. They saw an opportunity to make something genuinely useful, and the response was an outpouring of support on Kickstarter that allowed them to start Studio Neat. Honesty and passion are very apparent as they discuss their process, and that’s something I want to try to convey through my own project this semester. It’s hard to convince people to buy into an idea unless you buy into it yourself. I need to think of a product or service that I can really get excited about. Tom and Dan’s story is indeed remarkable, but at the same time, similar stories are becoming more common. The description of the transitional world that we are working as creators in is indeed “on the one hand, intimidating, and on the other, immensely liberating.” As someone who tends to like being provided with a certain amount of guidelines, I might need to remind myself how liberating reinventing the rules can be. Lots of food for thought here!
Studio Neat waste no time launching their new product, a humble Apple remote stand. This time they are making it in-house and launching independently, off Kickstarter. Today our class had the pleasure to chat with the guys behind the Studio Neat. They gave us really insightful thoughts about their Kickstarter Campaign and also about the book that they wrote: "It will be exhilarating", about this Indie business that surround many designers nowadays. For me in particular was really interesting to see their thoughts about a small company and how you can take advantage of this really expressing your point of view and having freedom to create the product that you want on the market! So it's okay to be small! Kickstarter is a place with a lot of opportunities to do small things according to them, what give me some relieve I got confess! Another interesting point of the conversation was when they mentioned that you should really be confident in the decision that you make as a designer because you can't please everyone! Keeping it personal and designing about something that you are really believe should be the fuel that moves your campaign! It's always really good to talk with some guys that achieved the success doing the same path that we are doing right now! Thanks for the inspirational talk guys!!
Studio Neat’s 2nd Kickstarter. What’s especially radical is the “Pay what you want” pricing model. The first 3000 people had the option to pay $1 to back the project—but if they did that, the project wouldn’t be funded. Part social experiment, part pricing research, part PR stunt—all genius.

We are in it for the long haul. We are not interested in venture funding or being acquired. We have been profitable since day one and we intend to keep that going. And we owe it all to our amazing customers and backers.
