hey there! My name is Franzi and I finally decided to start a studyblr! I am hoping for it to help me stay organized and motivated to study. My semester only starts in September but I’m hoping on getting some motivation and inspiration until then to start off right!

some facts about me and my studies

— I’m 19 years old and I live in southern Germany right now! I grew up here but haven’t always lived here and I’ve been moving around a lot in the past year. — I’ve worked as a journalist in Munich for the past semester and I’m only starting university (again) in September. — I will major in journalism (media and communications) and I am still hoping on getting into my dream university. I’ll only find out in the beginning of August (fingers crossed). — I used to go to UVic in Victoria, BC, where I studied English. Due to private reasons I had to quit studying there and come back to Germany. — I’m fluent in German and English and I also know French quiet well. — This blog is a sideblog, I follow and like from @franzitalks but I use tumblr mostly for my hockey blog @markstrom

interests & hobbies

— I play (ice) hockey and I also love horseback riding, skiing, snowboarding and sailing. — I care a lot about the environment and I’m always trying to create as little (plastic) waste as possible. For example I barely ever use plastic bags, my backpack is entirely made out of plastic bottles and my water bottle is eco-friendly and reusable too! — I travel a lot, I visit so many different countries a year and I love exploring new cultures (and their food haha!) — I love reading, even though I don’t read as often as I’d like to unfortunately. My favorite book is “The Humans” by Matt Haig and I really want to reread it on my next vacation. — My favorite tv shows are Parks & Rec, Brooklyn 99 and Adventure Time. I don’t watch a lot of tv shows though.

— I’m excited to start this blog because I want to get more motivated and better at my own time management. I’m hoping on improving my grades by being a part of this community and learning how to be productive on a consistent level. — I’m hoping on meeting many nice people and making some new friends. The community always seemed incredibly nice!! — I don’t use a lot of stationery, I love cute and small notebooks but I work with my laptop most of the time. I’m much more organized and I love my laptop a lot, so it was always great for me to use it to study. — I’m currently trying out a lot of different note taking and time management apps for the upcoming semester, so I can find the best one to use! — I’ll definitely post original content, like pictures and text posts. Right now I’m still in the organization phase where I’m setting everything up, but I’m definitely going to post my own content soon. I’ll be tracking the tag #studywithfranzi.

A Day-In-The-Life of a Senior Journalist

The journalism industry is constantly changing and evolving, and it’s more important than ever that your university degree gives you the skills to adapt to these changes. Bond Alumna and Senior Journalist at Rockhampton’s The Morning Bulletin, Michelle Gately, gives us a behind-the-scenes look at life as a 21st century journalist.

Truth be told, there is no ‘normal’ day for a news reporter. Each shift is a dynamic new adventure, which is one of the reasons I found this career so appealing. Online reporting has made the role of a journalist even more interesting, with the ability to break news as it happens with a variety of multimedia elements and real-time monitoring of a story’s performance.

Our morning in the newsroom starts with each reporter pitching their ideas and booking in the jobs they’ll cover for the day. It could be anything from the return of a beloved family pet that’s been missing six months or an obituary for a respected member of the community to a house fire that’s left a family homeless. The biggest days for any journalist though, are when there’s major breaking news. Sometimes this is involves a serious crime, but generally my longest days have involved chasing politicians on the campaign trail around multiple photo stops.

In both the Federal and State elections, Central Queensland has been a focal point which has provided plenty of exciting stories. Two of my longest days came following Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten around Rockhampton last year with multiple press conferences where the tiny contingent of local media (about five journalists) was pitted against reporters from national outlets. The key to local news is just that - keeping it local. People want to know more about the issues they care about and being a successful local newspaper means understanding these, then taking them to the people in charge. With a limited number of questions allowed at any given press conference, I’ve been forced to yell over experienced journalists to get in a question my editor wants answered. It’s both terrifying and exhilarating, part of the adrenaline rush that keeps journalists turning up day after day. In some cases, I’ve also been lucky enough to sit down with both Turnbull and Shorten during their visits to the region to discuss our biggest issues, fodder for a series of stories.

While political visits prove challenging because we’re forced to produce stories fast and stay on top of the big issues, other days are emotionally rough. Any day you cover a fatal accident or other death is a sad day in the office, especially if you’re given the privilege of writing an obituary piece for a grieving family. I am constantly amazed by the willingness of people to speak about their loved one or reflect on the toughest times of their life. There is no tougher story to write than these and I always do so hoping it may help in some small way. Yet these stories can also be the most affirming you’ll write, about everyday people who have left an unforgettable impression on those around them.

The frantic pace of politics and serious reporting is of course, always balanced out by the fun stories or the uplifting ones which leave you with an overwhelming sense of hope and joy. A recent story of this nature for me was when a group of Indigenous dancers from Woorabinda, the Kulgoodah Dancers, won a national competition and were asked to perform at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. It’s a town that’s been struggling with high youth crime rates, but this initiative has pulled people together and united the community in a celebration of culture. Or there’s the Rockhampton couple I interview every year about their latest incredible travels, from cycling across South America to hiking the Appalachian Trail.

It’s easy to be sucked in by the numbers in these days of online reporting, but it’s always good to remember why you wanted to become a journalist. I count myself lucky I’m able to do a job I’m genuinely passionate about. Whether it be to hold the powerful to account, report on war and conflict or just tell amazing stories, you’re part of a privileged group of people.
