the soufriere hills volcano on montserrat has gradually been burying the old capital, plymouth, under 12-18 feet of concrete-set volcanic ash from pyroclastic flows since it moved from being dormant to active. the capital was pre-evacuated though, avoiding a situation like pompeii.
