what pencil cases do you recommend ?

ah hello! i’m so flattered that you would stalk my blog :’)

anyways, ap gov is SUCH A FUN/INTERESTING class (although of course this depends highly on the teacher you have). i’m gonna start off with a disclaimer - which i always do when giving advice - because i really only have experience with my one class and my one teacher at my one high school, so you’ve gotta see what i have to say and decide whether or not it’s applicable to your situation. but these are the tips i have for the course!

do chapter outlines!!!

my teacher assigned one for our class every week, but even if yours doesn’t i think it’s still very useful to sit down with a laptop or notebook and outline each chapter before you talk about it in class. there’s so much material that your teacher probably won’t be able to go over things in depth, so it’s worth it to do a preview by yourself and then come to class with a bit of an idea of what’s ahead, and then you can ask questions and walk away with more of an understanding. outlines will also come in handy when you’re studying for tests, because you’ll be able to scan the most vital points from your outline rather than going over the whole chapter again

memorize quotations!

this sounds terrifying, i know, but just have a handful of quotations that are malleable to your needs/prompts, and you’ll be good to go. this is a really small amount of effort for a large payoff, because it doesn’t take much to remember a few words but it’ll come across as very impressive to a teacher/ap essay grader (like i still remember my fav quote from federalist no. 10 lol “liberty is to faction what air is to fire, an ailment without which it instantly expires)

use flashcards with vocab/document names/important events/etc

you can use material flashcards or an application (i used quizlet) for this, but even if you don’t do anything else i suggest, you should do this. like, seriously. you’ll need to recall what pork-barrel legislation is really quickly, or separate the free-exercise clause from the establishment clause, and it won’t help you at all if you spend fifteen minutes thinking it over before arriving at the answer. flashcards will get you there like that and condense the info down. your textbook should have a glossary in the back so you can start with those terms, and your teacher may even have a terms list, but other than that you should learn to judge in class which things are important and what is likely to reappear again and put them in your flashcards too

get a prep book/materials

if you’re planning on taking the ap test, this is so important. a prep book will tell you what the testers will try to trick you on, what they’re wanting to see in essays, etc. if you can’t buy one, search in a library or online (i remember seeing a masterpost going around the studyblr community where somebody scanned ap prep books for everyone)

do practice tests

this is also if you’re planning on taking the ap test. taking practice tests will mean you’re familiar with the format of the test and the questions they ask, and since half of it is just knowing how to take the test rather than knowing the actual material, this is the most important thing you can do to prep well for the ap test

ask questions! participate in class! have fun!!

so like yeah this is cheesy and gross, but i’m not kidding around! become genuinely interested in the subject if you’re not naturally interested in it by relating it to things you care about. think of connections between laws and everyday life, and ask your teacher about them. in class discussions, offer your opinion or rebut a classmate’s statement. this will all give you a deeper understanding of the subject, which will help your grade overall

stay updated on current events/news/politics

use an app like flipboard or read the new york times or something to keep up with what’s going on in the here and now of american government and politics. it’s no use learning about shit in class if you can’t apply it to real life situations outside of class. think about what happened in class as you read about hillary clinton’s campaign points, and then think about donald trump’s super pacs as you learn about that in class. make connections between the classroom and real life, both for your own good and also because you can pull that out and give current examples of things from the 1800s
