As some of you know, I am Icelandic and on the eve of December 12th the first Icelandic Santa Clause (or Yule Lad) came to town back home. That’s right, first. In Iceland there are 13 Santa Clauses and they don’t live on the North Pole but in the mountains with their baby-eating mom, dad and cat. In the olden days, they were more like trolls that liked to steal from people or play pranks around the holidays.
At the beginning of the 20th century however, they got to know the Santa Clause that lives in the North Pole and he taught them to be nicer. Ever since then, they come to town one by one during the last 13 nights leading to Christmas and leave gifts for children that put their shoes on their windowsill. Each Santa Claues has his own name and personality.
Stubby is the shortest of the bunch. However, shortness is handy when you sneak into kitchens and steal dirty pans only to scrape off the burned scraps and eat them.
