From the begging, he had known the limitations of their relationship.
He didn't fully express his concerns to him…he didn't want to put any strain on their relationship. It had been hard enough getting to the point they were at, he didn't need to further complicate it. After all, it shouldn't be too obvious. He still aged…just in a different way. A year in a humans life was so short in his. There came to a point where he knew he knew however.
From that moment it became an unspoken thought between them that one day he would leave his immortal lover all alone.
They still didn't speak of it. It was a painful thought, after all. In his humans life, his lover had dedicated many years of his life to him. They weren’t always happy years…but they were still years. In that time, they had grown to know each other well. He had learned affection from his human, something completely alien to him before. He wasn’t sure how he was going to live without it.
Than the time came for his lover to leave him.
He had known it was coming for months. He could see the sickness on his lover. Despite his best efforts, he could do nothing to slow or cure the disease that ate away at his human. During his last few days, he had simply existed with him. He had sat by his side and talked of happier times. He stopped trying to keep him alive and simply tried to let him know how much he meant to him.
He spent years simply trying to get past their last days.
He stopped paying attention to how much time he had spent being unproductive. Every time he would look at something in the wrong way, he would get flooded with memories. It was far to painful. He got up in the mornings, did a bare minimum of work, than went back to moping. It was pathetic, but all he could do. Everything else hurt.
There was, however, a point where it got better.
Through his years, he had taken much comfort in his own aging body. He felt old, and that was a step towards the end of a long pain filled journey. He had found long ago no one could replace his human. There were plenty others, yes. None of them, however, where him and that’s all he wanted. He hadn't put much thought into what lie beyond his life, but he didn't much mind. His human was there and that was all that mattered in the end.
The day finally came when he was released from his living duties.
At last, his journey was rewarded with the site of his human once more. He could be with him again. He could hold him and tell him of his life after his departure. Though he could not think of the words to describe the realm he was in after his own passing, he knew he was happy. He was with his human and thats all he had really wanted.
