Today marks the 124th year since the Wounded Knee Massacre (December 29th, 1890) on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. These are some of the working images from my visit to the site this August.

1) Wounded Knee visitor center. The man sitting just to the right of the structure is the son of the man who built it, and he acts as host. Over the years the visitor center has been broken into and stripped of its wiring.

3) Interior shot, a wall dedicated to the 1868 treaty that was broken to annex the Black Hills from the Lakota Sioux, as well as mention of the case ultimately decided in 1980 by the Supreme Court delivering damages for that action. To this day the tribe has not accepted the damages. The money is being held by the Treasury, and now totals over $1 billion.

4) Slash's hat (Guns & Roses), left during a visit some years ago.

5) "Invation" [sic] list of grievances inside the cemetery memorial.

6) Monument to the dead, Wounded Knee cemetery. A mass grave was dug days after the massacre. Heavy snow prevented access to the site for up to 4 days, when they arrived to bury the dead, many were frozen into grotesque form (seen here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a9/Woundedknee1891.jpg )
