Damn the art in this issue is so good! Metal Sonic really channels his OVA self with all these poses when he’s dumped into a random portal.
There’s a couple of typical meme-y references in this issue too, and its often Flynn to blame for their inclusion, but I’ll argue that in this issue they get a pass for being in a totally different context than their origin. Its pretty cool when Metal gets to say “It’s no Use.” after he No Sells Silver’s telekinesis because he doesn’t have many other lines anyway. And Silver saying Sonic’s “You’re too slow!” is changed from an annoying taunt voice clip to a triumphant retort after he gets back at Metal.
Does this mean I want more meme references in comic books? Well, no, but I’m just defending their use in this issue. xP
We’re right on the cusp of Worlds Unite and I’m really not looking forward to it. Hopefully this last Sonic-related issue puts me in a good mood before I start reviewing that trash fire.
Also, this is a milestone issue! Sonic Universe reached #75 and they flaunt it with not one, not two, but eight variant covers! Not all of them are amazing, but I particularly love the ones drawn by Evan Stanley, Jim Amash, Lamar Wells and Gary Martin.
I think I have a soft spot for covers showing the “comic’s greatest hits” and big crowd pieces. xD
I’m surprised this hadn’t been brought up before, but since Silver is from the future, why doesn’t anyone ask him if they’ve secured a good future or not? The comic goes by the “change the future, change your memories” kind of rules for Silver, and while the comic can’t go more into that, its neat that they take a second to explain it.
Meanwhile, presumably on Lost Hex, Zavok is suddenly here! He’s just standing around while a possessed Orbot foreshadows what’s gonna go about in Worlds Unite.
Uh, yeah, this issue is more of a visual spectacle than a good story. All the pieces are in place for the upcoming crossover. Hope you guys are sitting comfortably, because my word do I have things to say about that...
Uh oh, Sonic chased Metal Sonic through one of those “Genesis Portals” and ended up in Silver’s time!
I wonder if the name “Burning Ruin Zone” was attributed to this place before or after the bad future?
